Philly is a great course for a marathon. It is mostly flat and there is great crowd support, especially in the Manayunk section.

I'd save the beer for after the marathon.

speaking from experience, when you're over 40, beer goes straight to your gut. no faster and more dependable way to put a roll around the middle or chunks in your thighs than a daily dark beer. as a runner, i'd much rather have an "everything bagel" as a snack before bed than the empty beer calories before dinner which, incidentally, leaves me just wanting another beer before dinner.

i haven't stopped drinking completely, just stopped drinking daily. it was the "daily 5:00 beer" that was doing me in, performance-wise and weight-wise. i guess i couldn't draw the line at just one and NO, we aren't talking alcohol abuse, i just liked beer. dark, micro brewed beers. oh hell yeah.

Exactly the moderation of which I spoke.

I'm on the same page with you, elkid.
But your original statement is very misleading. I wouldn't bring it up anywhere other than "Starting Line".
Anyone new to running should be aware that Riff Raffers don't routinely win races. runaroundsue, jrjo, Coach Craig come to mind, and I would be interested in hearing their thoughts on alcohol consumption prior to competitions. Floridaboiler has won an ultra, which is impressive. But that is only one example. Not several.
Again, I understand the point you are making. But I wouldn't try to imply to newbies that several of us routinely win races and acquire age group awards and drink a few beers a week.
That statement may possibly be true. But I would caution anyone just getting into running about believing that statement until it has been proven.
On a side note, I know some runners that drink more than in moderation... yet they compete at the world class level. It makes me think that some people are so gifted, it doesn't matter what they do. But most of the people that come to sites like this probably don't fit that category.
And alcohol consumption probably plays a much larger role than is being presented in this thread.

I will agree with you X that it depends on the person. And I think natural talent can play a role here.
Some people can drink several beers and it has no effect on them, but others who dehydrate easily, etc. may need to be careful.
Actually I think it all a matter of personal perference while training...
Just like choosing how many days you should run a week...
WHATEVER WORKS FOR YOU....

I don't have anyhting to add to this thread other than the fact that I have beverages a few times a week and I place in my age group occassionaly.

or you could just join the Hash House Harriers: drinking club with a running problem. Dilemma solved. I agree with you that moderation is key.

Personally, I'm trying (key word is trying) to confine all alcohol comsumption to one day per week. Kinda of like my cheat day for diet. I was already doing that with the food portion of my diet. Might as well try it with regard to alcohol.

As I've gotten a little older, alcohol does seem to effect me more and more (esp. with regard to weight training). I haven't been running since last Fall, so I can't speak to that in my current state.

It's ironic to me how many times you get offered an adult beverage after a workout or when you are leaving the courts. I'm saying no to that beverage, more now then ever. :)

I know I've posted before my views on alcohol and as "unpopular" as they might be, they have been formed over 25-years of running, countless age group placings, a handful of overall wins, conversations with hundreds of runners, reading all the books and articles I can get my grubby mitts on and watching ringside the performances of those that do drink and run versus those that don't.
For whatever stock you might want to put in my :twocents: based on what I've filed in the grey matter between my ears, I will perch myself on my little soapbox that every runner will be a better runner without alcohol in their training regime.

I'm sorry but I can't do that. I heard gin has a lot of good carbs. I'm going to drink that instead of beer. Thanks for the help, though.

Yikes!

This is all something to think about. I don't drink much and that's by choice. I couldn't function if I did. However, if I do drink a beer (or 2), I have been known to get up the next day and run. I can handle it and it hasn't affected my performance. I wouldn't recommend drinking just prior to a race, because you do want to be in your best shape before performing. I have never done so and probably would always refrain from drinking just before. This is just me. However, I'm willing to be that drinking a few beers here and there doesn't hurt some of the top performers. I could be wrong...

I think it's all how it taken and that drinking should be done in moderation. That's just me.

Now, if we're talking about golf...I need two beers minimum before I ever swing a club.
