hello everybody. i had an L5-S1 microdiscectomy three weeks ago. the surgery went just fine bit it seems to have really irritated the nerve root and now my leg is actually more painful now than it was the surgery. my doc seems unconcerned, but is not the most talkative guy in the world, and i am really worried about all this! i am seeing some very slow improvement, but i am really uncertain regarding this pain. so, any advice or coments you can provide would be very appreciated!!!! thanks a lot!!

I believe that you were told that recovery is very individual and very, very surgeon dependent. Most spinal surgeries, unless the pain was due to a mechanical problem really are a c**p shoot as far as relieving pain. However, there are meny cases when healing does take much much longer – even few months. I would suggest you to talk to the rehab specialist and especially the PT part of the team to see what they think about all this and what they recommend. They know you best and what surgery consisted of so they should be able to give you the best answer regarding how long recovery process will last. I know this is not much, but I hope it helps.

I also had a lower discectomy almost three weeks ago. I also have some different pains and sensations that I did not have before, but I had a cevical fusion 4 years ago and it took almost 6 months for things to calm down and get back to normal.
