I've had a mid foot fusion done and I'm only 24 years old nearly 25 years, I was told I needed this operation at 22 years old but they didn't want to do it cause of being so young, but it limited some movement but I rather less movement then being in so much pain.

Hi Sarah.n ...if you look at all the responses on mid foot fusion you can see we are all doing well (we are all older than you though). For that to have been done at such a young age you must have been some sort of athlete. I had the talonavicular fusion 6 Jan 2014 and am still recovering, the swelling moves about in different parts of the foot and does cause discomfort (resting it for me has been the only option). its a long process and I still use one crutch and find it difficult on hard surfaces. You will find this out and be prepared for the non weight bearing time that does your "brain in" being dependent upon someone. I had arthiritus for 6 years on that bone (no cartilidge) but all my arthiritic pain is gone. It is however replaced with very very tight tendons and lots of stretches holding it for 30 seconds at a time..this you must do this regularly to get better use of your foot. I have no rotation on my ankle now but then when I had the pain I did not have any anyway ...so for me it does not matter. Swimming is very good but I have not done it, I hate it. Look up California 57 she has been absolutely marvellous!! Good luck Yvonne.

Hi D..its been a while since we spoke but I have had "husband issues" and have been staying at my sons and daughters basically anywhere that has a bed. Doing well though but those exercises take their toll..was only holding the pose for 10 seconds ..it was supposed to be 30..physio said not holding it for that length of time the tendons ping back. Still with the stick...walking on pavements when I am out makes me really really tired.. but still no pain and I have the swelling above the ankle now but am happy with it. I do take pain killers but the pain is a different kind of pain. Actually I live in Kent, my children are in Surrey. I did laugh because I spent 25 years in East London, maybe its the way I compose my emails - non stop with very little punctuation..lazy. So you travel in your job..perhaps we can meet up
kind regards
Yvonne

When I took the plane out - I had arranged for wheelchair service at the airport terminals - brilliant! It's free and it gets you a head of the queue. I felt slightly guilty, but it fantastic.
My physio said I am coming along well. I have an exercise where I need to stand on my bad foot toes, utter pain.
Swimming is important. If you can, you should swim. It will aid in healing and reducing the pain.
I am still icing and occassionaly taking pain meds. It makes me feel better that you are also experiencing that. I don't need a crutch but still walk slower than before, and every step is painful. I think this week is worse then last week. I am only swimming every other day, and it makes a difference if it is every day.
I sent a message via the forum sight, you should check the inbox.

Welcome the the forum - sorry to hear at such a tender age that you required this surgery. What part of the foot did you have done? It is important to swim when your doctor and physio says you can. It can be as early as 8 weeks. Did they put a hard cast on your foot or removal-able boot? If it is removal-able, get a icepack system, it will reduce the swelling and reduce recovery time.
Take your pain meds. It is painful, I am still occasionally taking them. Good luck with your recovery.

Hey, I had my talonavicular fusion done on the 3rd of January 2014, I was in a non weight bearing cast for 7 weeks then went into an air cast for 6 weeks. After all this I have now got a stress fracture in my navicular running right along side one of the screws. Which means I'm am back in the boot 4 weeks after getting rid of it. I was a hockey player and got hit on the foot and shattered part of my navicular, but the break wasn't found until the end of the season so after playing on a broke more and more off the bone. This all happened 4 years ago, I had surgery in 2012 to get rid of the broken bits of bone and had a few holes drilled to encourage the bone to reform but this didn't work and I picked up 3 stress fractures between 2012 and 2014. It is looking like my fusion hasn't worked and after talking to my surgeon I will be offered the surgery again or an ankle replacement. Hitch all sounds pretty drastic considering the fact I'm only 22. So bottom line, really consider your options before having surgery like this because the grass isn't always greener on the other side! Hope this helps somebody somewhere!!

Sorry to hear about the horrible experience you have had especially at such a young age.

I fell off a ladder 4 years ago and fractured my heel. I started having a lot of pain and was advised to have the fusion done. I wish I hadn't. It has really limited me and hurts all the time. I wish I could have it reversed. You are so young I would hate for this to happen to you. Find another specialist, do some research, get an injection. The injections hurt but they really help for like 6 months. Good luck to you.

Hi D.. all going good.. I left the crutches off now 10 days ago ..My stance changed and I was becoming too dependent upon them. Signed off from physio several weeks ago. Still doing my exercises at the wall and tendons are quite good. Get the occasional swelling when I have been on them a few hours, I also don't wear trainers all the time now but flat shoes. I was told by the physio that I had a text book fusion. I do take pain killers because my shoulder has not healed properly and exercising that also. Swapped one pain for another but have absolutely no arthritic pain whatsoever, Getting back into my own skin now and feel goodish - also walking on pavements has become easier aswell. Hope things are going well for you. ....I still might have a go at running but not yet and still no swimming!!. Kind regards Yvonne

Hi there .. my opinion when fusions don.t work is how much damage is done to the foot ankle prior to the op, I played netball for 40 years and the fusion was on the landing foot and the one I had most injuries on but only bad sprains etc. I know somebody who broke his foot and his fusion has not taken maybe its the state of the foot before fusion. Mine has worked for the above reason. So sorry to hear that you r having problems I can only imagine how you must be feeling. knd rgds Yvonne

Hi there. I too had surgery on my right foot for a navicular cuneiform fusion on the 28th of July 2014. Till today which is the 26th of August my foot is still sore. After the surgery my foot was put in a cast for almost 2 weeks and then in a moon boot (heavy as!) Wondering how long I can take the painkillers - can anyone advise please.
Before the surgery the surgeon told me to take leave for 6 weeks which I did and the last time I met him he told me that maybe I would have to take some more leave! Hope my foot will be fine by the end of the leave as I am already having the leave without pay!
Can anyone be of any help in letting me know how long does this fusion surgery take to heal? Wish I had read more about the prognosis of this kind of surgery before having the op.

I had my mid foot fusion done 5yrs ago and still struggle with pain but not half as bad as used to prior to the fusion. My doctor gave me a steroid injection into the joint to see if the fusion was going to have a good effect and it was amazing. I bounced around like a kid for about 6 weeks before it gradually wore off. Anyway I'm 41 now with 2 children who I can still runaround with - even though it might take a week to recover! I'm relatively pain free most of the time. My suggestion would be go for the fusion if you can't live with the constant pain.

Hi Deano,
I have a 13 year lisfranc missed diagnosis. I'm a dancer, x international swimmer and have been offered fusion. I'm now 44. I can't run or dance without pain. Would you say fusion might get me back to pain free dance and running. I too am very active, Jo

I am an active masters swimmer (age 71) and am considering talonavicular joint fusion. I am very concerned that I will not have the necessary flexibility to kick properly. Can you offer any first hand experience with this? Jim E
