I was hit by a car 25 years ago and have had 3 fusions so far- having mid foot one next month. I got 12-14 years between each one before next set of joints wore out. Pain free and very active years. Well worth it but reality is, it takes 6-8 months until you can do everything ( walk, golf, tennis, hike ski etc)..a long recovery but beats the alternative of pain with every step!!

Hey, my name is Clay Vance and I had a crush injury on Dec. 13 2016. I was very active. I ran half and full marathons. My doctor approved me to go back to work on light duty. However, I’m still in pain and the arthritis is horrible. I have to decide in 6 weeks if I want a fusion done. I crushed my foot at work, (I work in a plant). Has never been the same since! Is there a chance that I could become somewhat active again if I have this procedure done?
Thanks!

Hi, I'm keen to hear if you managed to get back to running again? I was diagnosed with Mueller Weiss syndrome nearly 2 years go and as a result have bone on bone arthritis. I was a keen runner and triathlete and have was told to stop running or any impact sport. Was gutted! But now am in a position of limping daily and couldn't contemplate running. I'm told fusion is inevitable, but at the same time they don't want to do it yet while I'm still reasonably mobile.Your post gives me hope that maybe the fusion would not only alleviate the pain, but allow me to run again!?

In hindsight do you wish you would've done the surgery back when initially recommended?

I could not stand more than 3-5 hours at work due to severe pain in both feet as result of plantar fasciitis. After receiving proper treatments and wearing the orthofeet shoes I can happily say that I am able to stand for 12 hours at work and be pain free in both my feet. They feel great and I love the colors. Have helped my knee pain tremendously.

I'm in Boston also and wondered who your surgeon/dr is I am seeing the foot specialist at NE baptist. He isn't an orthopedic just a foot and ankle reconstruction specialist. I am on my 6 looking at 7th surgery.maybe I should go to an ortho.

I am trying to find the person who lives or lived in Baltimore talking about needing a mid-foot fusion. I live in Annapolis and have severe arthritis in both feet but the left is the worst. I am wondering where the Baltimore person ended up going for their surgery. I just had a consult with Dr. Lew Shon at Mercy Foot and Ankle Institute. I heard great things about him but found him to be too quick and relaxed about the surgery. I have a kidney transplant and expressed some underlying health issues and he didn't seem concerned at all. Would love to hear how things have gone for for you

Hi Jim. Where do you live and how did you find an Extremeties Chiropractor? I would love to try any type of alternative to surgery whenever possible. I am 55 and currently in constant pain when walking due to arthritis in the arches of both feet. Thanks for any advice, Adrienne

I had my talonavicular foot fusion on October 4, 2021,its a long recovery and hurts like hell but I’m four months in to the recovery and couldn’t be happier, getting better every day can take up to a year for a complete recovery. Don’t have second thoughts on doing the surgery you’ll be better off after the recovery!

This is to all who has had or needs to have a midfoot fusion.I am 55 and had my midfoot fusion surgery 11 weeks ago, plates and screws in 1st and 2nd metatarsal, cuneiform, staple, had to add donor bone for all that had to be cut out, raised my arch some and yes I made it. Was very rough and painful being non weight bearing for about 7 weeks, wheelchair for so long, but now I returned to work at 10 weeks in a nursing home. So yes there’s hope, my foot was mid diagnosed for 25 years and this is the 1 st time I can walk on that foot with no pain.. Still tender on midfoot area but so so much better than before.. there is a light at the end of the tunnel

I have just been diagnosed with mid-foot arthritis and need to know more about surgery. Is this my only option to relieve the pain? I can't take ibuprofen as it upsets my tummy.
