Hello. Neck clicking or cracking, especially at the base of the skull, is something that some people experience. There are several potential causes for this:
-
Cavitation: When a joint moves, the pressure within the joint changes, leading to the formation of gas bubbles. When these bubbles collapse or burst, they can produce a clicking or cracking sound.
-
Ligament or tendon moving around bone: Sometimes, the ligaments or tendons can move over the bones and, when they return to their original position, produce a clicking sound.
-
Arthritis: The degeneration of cartilage due to osteoarthritis can lead to bones rubbing against each other, which might produce a clicking or grinding sound.
-
Cervical spine instability: This is less common, but instability in the vertebrae in the neck could produce a clicking sound when moving the head.
-
Other causes: Other conditions like disc disorders, injuries, or other factors might also lead to clicking or cracking sounds.
Even if it isn't causing discomfort, considering it has been ongoing for 8 months, it would be a good idea to consult with a physician, preferably a specialist like an orthopedic doctor or a neurologist, to get an accurate diagnosis and to rule out any potential underlying issues.
Good luck!
