I have discovered a swollen area on the left side of the base of my skull. I feel some pressure there, especially when I lean back. I first noticed it yesterday upon waking up. I am not sick, have not had any injuries, and think of myself as in pretty good health. I do have very dry skin on my scalp and often itch it. This has led to some scabbing in that area. I am wondering if it became infected? What should I be concerned about? Do I need to get any tests?

Hey yudall. The swelling on the base of your skull you are mentioning is usually connected with migraines and fibromyalgia. Since you've mentioned that you don't have any health issues, then something else must be the cause. Dry skin and itching could be possible cause. If you wound your scalp it could become infected causing swelling.
It could be also a swollen lymph node, which are located on the skull as well as near regions such as neck or shoulders. Again, one of the main causes for swelling of the lymph nodes is infection, but there are also more serious diseases that could be indicated by swollen lymph nodes, such as cancer.
However, I think you should make an appointment for further examination, the sooner the better. Only doctor can tell what this swelling could be. It's probably nothing to worry about, but visit you doctor and get right diagnose.

iIhave the same thing right now and I believe it is infection in the lymph nodes. i often get it when i have been excercising or change to heathier eating habits. The lymph nodes store toxins that need to be released from the body. try drinking more water. i asked my doctor and he said "there are no glands back there". No wonder i don't go to see him often!

I also work out, and today I have the same swelling. I have had it before. I will monitor it. I am 55 years old. Workout (cardio, weights, joint and muscle, stretching) pretty hard 3 times a week. Plus walk at least 10 miles a week.
