I started having hemorrhoids when I was 25 and now at 35 they have gotten pretty bad and prolapsed regularly. I had tried IR coagulation but it didn't seem to help. Next I tried banding which helped some bu not much. Finally I listened to my wife and talked to a general surgeon who is highly respected in our area about my options and he recommended PPH. I went in on Thursday the 19th and had it done under general anesthesia at the hospital. About 1 pm they took me back and out I went.
Waking up wasn't too much fun. Instead of the morphine I had been given during a previous surgery, breaking and resetting nose, they were giving me Lortab in my IV apparently. As I drifted in and ou of consciousness I remember saying it hurt and being told they would get me another dose. The pain was about a 7 and just a little worse than my prolapsed hemorrhoids had been when prolapsed. After a BM they felt like raw skin touching raw skin and I would have to use a some toilet paper or a towel to soak up the blood. Sometimes I would have a steady stream of blood squirting into the toilet. This was really affecting my work but had come about so slowly that I had forgotten what it was like not to have them.
After getting out of recovery and finally having my pain down to around a 6 my nurse said I could go home as soon as I urinated. I felt like I had to go and headed off to the restroom. Nothing! I had never experienced this before and started panicking about a catheter. The nurse said they wouldn't do a catheter for 6 hours and it had only been 4. Finally a little while later after 4 or 5 tries I was able to get a short trickle of urine out which was enough for the nurse to send me home. During all this every time I would get up and try to go I would get sick and throw up the Sprite they had been giving me. Never been sick during the previous 2 times under general anesthesia.
It was 9:30 when I got home with a hurting butt, a sick stomach and a bladder that felt like it was going to explode. Every half hour to hour during the night I would get up and try to urinate but only a few short lived streams would come out. I had stopped puking and hurting so much by around 3 am though. Then at about 8 am I guss whatever pain meds I had gotten in the hospital wore off and I was hurting again. I took my Lortab and then another. This didn't help much so I called and asked for better pain meds. They suggested trying ibuprofin along with the Lortab. I did this and that kept the pain down to a pretty decent level. Maybe a 4.
The evening after surgery I had not eaten anything but jello and some cool whip fruit salad while taking my pain pills. I decided to risk a BM and got 3 chicken strips which caused quite a bit of gas. That surprisingly didn't hurt when it came out.
It's now 48 hours later and I fel pretty good. I have had some mirlax, a ham sandwhich and more of the cool whip fruit salad today. No BM yet but lots of gas. I am pretty confident that my first BM won't be to bad. I am taking my pain pills as needed but even without them my pain is about half what it was with the flare ups. I am very happy with my decision and my bum is back to how it should be for the first time in a decade.
The doctor said that when he got into my procedure they were worse than he had anticipated and not only did the PPH but also banded two of them.
I will make sure and update on how things are tomorrow. Surprisingly at this point in time putting some TP in my underwear and sitting in a nice soft chair is pretty comfortable. Seems likethe support is a good thing. Oh and finally as of this morning roughly 36 hours after the PPH I am able to fully empty my bladder again. Back to about 80 of normal function I would say. When I have passed massive amounts of gas on the toilet there has just been some very small amounts of blood.

Now approaching 72 hours after the procedure. I am taking 400mg of Ibuprofin every 4-5 hours. I have been eating normally including fruits vegetables and fast food. I have only had one dose of Mirilax and that was yesterday. Still no BM but lots of gas continues. Several times it has made me run to the bathroom thinking this is it but always just turns out to be gas. Feel pretty good really and aside from worrying about my first BM hurting don't have much to complain about. Urinating normally and bum only has occasional sharp pains that the Ibuprofin gets rid of.

Day 4 and all is well except I am still having gas and some cramps after eating. Still waiting on first BM. Very small amounts of blood seeping out after passing gas. Pain is not bad and I am still taking 400mg of Ibuprofin every 4-6 hours. Tried going longer but start to get a little more pain so I am staying on it for now. I am back at work but I am only doing light stuff. Sitting is the most comfortable position. Walking hurts just a little.

Day 5 and I had my first BM this morning. Nothing too major but at least it is over with. Absolutely no pain or stinging or anything. I am off all pain medication and only have very slight pressure if I sit on a hard wood chair or stool. This was a great decision and I am so happy I did it. No regrets at all.

Day 7 and I am pretty much back to normal. When I need to have a BM I do feel a kind of dull pain/pressure that goes away afterward but other than that all is great. First day that I haven't had any bleeding during BM also.

I had pph hemorrhoid surgery 8 days ago, surgery was a breeze, but now have gas pains and have to go after eating or drinking anything. Sometimes just gas or air. Is this normal, and when will it stop?
