I'm relatively new to running. I can consistently for Rugby during the spring, but I took a few weeks off. I want to get back into it, but running has always been so painful, even before I started habitually running. My lungs hurt and it hurts to breath. I feel as if my legs can go forever but my lungs just aren't keeping up. There's a definite sharp pain when I breath and it turns into more of a gasp than a normal labored breath.

I rollerblade at least 15m/trip twice a week and I bike at least 30mi/trip three times a week. Even then, my legs start to get tired toward the end, never my lungs or have breathing problems.

Is this a medical problem or a problem that will go away as I run more?

Sounds like sports induced asthma, which I also have. Get it checked out by a doctor it may or may not be asthma.

Great suggestion. Any chance you're trying too hard. Have you tried the Couch to 5k program? It's a good one, and starts you off slow. Being that you're already conditioned for other sports, I think you'd adjust quickly and could move around the schedule as appropriate.

When I started running I had a similar problem. I was active in other things, but it took my lungs a few weeks to catch up with my legs.

I second the exercise induced asthma. Until I started running I never had as many issues when I did other activities. I am able to keep it relatively under control now.
