delama10, thanks for the encouragement. I've never had issues with significant weight gain and initially contributed the gain to my work/school schedule and poor diet but like you, I've had sugar cravings and found myself thinking about food. What?!!! I've never really just thought about food. I would often joke about having to remind myself to feed my body; now I'm thinking about food. My energy level had been really low also so I've been looking for protein shakes to increase my energy. I took it out the other night and I'm looking forward to returning to the me I know. THANKS again for the encouragement. I wish you the best as well.

I've been on the Nuva ring for almost a year now. I got married and was taking my nursing boards and buying a house all around the same time so I thought my 20 pound weight gain was from the stress. I run marathons and go to the gym daily so when I realized I wasn't dropping ANY weight I called my Gyno. She told me that on the ring your body becomes a early "pregnancy" state where you gain weight, have sugar cravings, and a lose sex drive. Not everyone has these side effects- I only experience the weight, and she said after a few months of not taking it (she told me about two because I'm in my mid twenties) the side effects should all wear off. I've always been under 100 pounds but my husband doesn't mind the extra weight and knowing why my body is this way makes me feel more relaxed. I'm def going to try to decrease further weight gain by continuing to exercise

I agree with you! I took Yaz for about 2 years and found that it was the only birth control that didn't cause weight gain (I blieve it has a natural diuretic in it). Then about 6 months ago, I decided to try the Nuva Ring simply for the convenience of not having to take a pill every day! I work out and try to watch what I eat and have still gained an unexplainable 10-15 pounds! I will be getting back on Yaz!

I was on NuvaRing from 2010 - 2017 and weight gain was never an issue. I worked out and watched what I ate regularly. I only switched to Mirena due to the pending legislative changes in the US Insurance guidelines and coverage.

So I am 40 years old and have been on BC most of my life. I was on Yaz for years, but my doctor convinced me to try Nuvaring, so I did. I was on it for maybe two years. I had started to put on weight but I figured it was just age related weight gain. But then no matter how hard I tried I could not get the weight off. I also was ravenously hungry. I would wake up in the middle of the night to eat! My doctor kept saying no it cannot be that, and so I trudged on. I even started going to a weight loss clinic for help. I gained 25 pounds in a year and could not get it off. I exercised I counted calories, I was starving and angry. Finally I told my doctor switch me back to yaz. I lost five pounds in a week. I am only 5'2, and the weight continues to drop off. My appetite has returned to normal. I think it was also causing me to carry a lot of water weight. My rings were constantly getting stuck on my fingers, and now they don't. I had a similar issue years ago when they prescribed Proprananol for my migraines, so maybe for whatever reason I am very sensitive to these things. But ladies, do not ignore your body, or you intuition. For whatever reason doctors are hesitant to believe these drugs cause weight gain, but in my case it absolutely did.

Thank you for saying to follow your intuition. And yes when asking my OB or his staff they don’t really like to mention the side effects. You’ll have to read the pamphlet. But this thread confirmed what I’ve been feeling for the past 5 months. I’ve tried NR before and never experienced this terrible amount of weight gain. Not to mention mood swings, non existent libido, depression (could be bc of the weight gain), irritation after sex, which I was then put on a cream and crazy hunger drives. I’m supposed to switch it out tonight but I’ll be removing it instead. It isn’t worth it. Doesn’t make sense to be on bc that’s doing so much harm when I’m not even in the mood anymore. Bye NV!

This past November, I stopped the Nuvaring after 10 years! I am 45, workout regularly, but could not lose weight watching my diet and increasing my workouts. Figured it was just my age and metabolism slowing down.

But, no! I shed close to 8 lbs immediately without trying and feel more muscular. Now that I am trying, I am close to losing 12-15lbs.

I am convinced it was going off the Nuvaring!
