I've been on Plaquenil for the past year having a dosage of 200 mg bid. My ophthalmologist tells me that he would prefer to have me take a lower dosage. He asked me if I thought I'd be OK with a small amount, but I told him that the reason we went to 200 mg bid instead of qd was because I was getting little relief on that quantity. I am talking several headaches monthly...ones that didn't respond to pain meds. My RA has improved, I think, on the current regime of meds. Can you compare me Plaquenil and methotrexate, maybe methotrexate, would be better for me.

I am not sure what your question is, but Plaquenil is very well tolerated at the dose of 400 mg daily. If you are a very small person your rheumatologist may wish to decrease the daily maintenance dose, but I know that many patients are continued on the 400 mg daily dose for long periods. In defense of your ophthalmologist, the eye problems with Plaqueni, although rare are dose related. Comparison of Plaquenil and methotrexate is difficult. Both drugs are very well tolerated and have different side effects, but if you have other medical problems, one drug might be better for you and you should discuss this with your rheumatologist.
