My husband and I have been married for 2 years now and have finally decided it was time we had children. As this is my first time, I have a question I would like to ask. Both my husband and I take medications. I would like to know if this is relevant for my future pregnancy and for the conceiving alone. Thank you kindly for your help

First, I would like to congratulate you on your decision and wish you good luck. Depending on the medications, they could have an impact on the fetus. There are certain medications that can cause birth defects, and also some whose effects on the fetus are not known. Usually, it is advised to get off the medications while trying to conceive but if this is not possible or appropriate, then you should discuss it with your doctor. The drugs whose dangerous effects to the fetus are known should be discontinued at least 3 months before conceiving. If you suffer from chronic diseases, then you need to educate yourself about the impact of pregnancy on your health, baby’s health, and certain changes you will need to make. Medical problems need to be under control before you conceive and you must take good care of yourself during pregnancy for both yours and your baby’s health.
