I am recieving a dose of radioactive iodine next week which is 4 weeks after my total thyroidectomy for thyroid cancer. I have read about side effects of the iodine and I was wondering how severe the side effects are? Does everyone get nauseous, dry mouth, etc? I am a student and I am kind of freaking out about how many classes I may miss. Anyone out there recieve RAI and can tell me what to expect?
Thanks! o.O

Hello.
I have had two rounds of RAI treatment, also while I was in university. The first time in the hospital - which is basically a room to yourself in isolation for two days. I really only experienced nausia and became bored from being alone. Bring magazines or things to keep you occupied. Its also great to have friends/family call your room because you can talk on the phone. Suck lemon candies and drink tea with lemon. I had sore saliva glands but it goes away. I also lost sense of taste for about a week after which is frustrating - and craved salty foods - once it comes back though you really appreciate eating again.
I missed a few classes because you are not allowed to be within almost a meter of others for more than 30 mins or so. The Dr. recommended missing class for a week - however i went, and moved around alot and sat by myself.
If you have any other questions i am happy to help - ive had two surgeries and done my share of RAI treatments/scanner doses.
Hopefully this helps you!

Hi regarding@1 the RAI treatment in my case it only made me a little sick right after I took the pill, and I had a high dose of 100 mlc I went home the following day and I did stayed home by myself for 5 days as instructed by my doctor, you don't want to put others in danger of contamination.
I had my surgery two years ago have blod work done and see my Endo every 8 weeks and get a neck ultrasound every six moths. My tumors markers are fine.
That's all you can do have your self check regularly think positive and have faith.77@6
