Hi I've been doing research on this for a while now. I have two boys and with first delivery had a very long labour and 4th degree tear. For years I've been noticing passing of gas through my vagina. I've been to my GP on numerous occasions but wasn't taken seriously. It's becoming embarassing because I suffer from IBS and am now finding that I don't have control over vaginal gas. I don't pass stool through my vagina but when I pass stool I pass urine too. It's so distressing and I'm worried all the time especially when at work. I have a gynae appointment next week and I hope they get to the bottom of it. I think I may have a small fistula and this is the reason I only have pass gas rather than faeces as well.

Ms Lakesider, I am in EXACTLY your situation! I had rectal cancer including radiation, chemo, LAR, ileostomy and reversal of ileostomy. I am having very mild and occasional passage of gas vaginally (or possibly through urethra). Did you end up going to Spain or having surgery? I would love to hear how you are doing and hope you are back to regular life.

Hi,

I also wanted to reply even though I know this is an old thread, just in case someone is searching the internet for info on this topic.  I too had a rectovaginal fistula that healed on its own.  I noticed symptoms about a month after giving birth and having a fourth degree tear, and was in constant pain.  I was very scared and immediately went to my obgyn when I first noticed the symptoms, but she couldn't see the fistula with the naked eye.  I believe mine was pretty small as the stuff passing through was very small as well, however I was in a lot of excruciating pain non-stop.  I received estrogen cream to apply vaginally, and did 2 warm baths a day for 15 minutes each, which I did religiously.  I also was sent to a colorectal surgeon, who recommended I wait to see if it heals on its own.  One day the symptoms seemed to suddenly stop.  But I was still in pain for weeks; I was in considerable pain even 3 months after giving birth.  But the symptoms were gone.  I had an MRI done to really find out what was going on down there, and it confirmed that my fistula had healed, there was no sign of it 3 months on.  So I think there is hope that these things sometimes can in fact heal on their own.  I think the things that helped me heal are estrogen cream - this helped immensely to strengthen the tissues in that area, and the baths as well as the estrogen cream both bringing heat and circulation to that area helped my body rebuild the tissues and cells in that area.  I also think it was crucial that I went to the doctor as soon as I had a symptom to start the estrogen cream immediately, and also to make myself rest more so the area could heal.  Having been through this, I know how traumatic and depressing this condition can be.  I hope my story helps someone out there, and I really pray for anyone working to heal their bodies from this condition.

No, it will not heal by itself. I had a Rectal-Vaginal fistula after having my child, a doctor found it 5 years later doing a routine Pap Smear..I asked the same thing..I was told it could possibly tear even more. The dangerous part is having diarrhea..That can cause infection.

I had the same experience for several weeks. I have not had a child and have no idea how it began. I saw a surgeon, we ran tests, he saw nothing and now it's completely fine. The entire length was maybe 9 weeks of active vaginal leakage. Hooray!

Hi, just want to ask if your fistula really healed on it's own and how are you doing today, because i have the same issues with yours. How about gas passing to vaginal area? do you still pass gas there? my gynecologist cant locate the fistula anymore, but still there is feces coming out. My baby is 10 weeks now.

Hey... I've tried looking up the "living with a obstetric fistula" and it isn't pulling up. This is the second time I have seen it mentioned and I was wondering what's up?

P.S. - I developed a rvf after the delivery of my twins. They must have sent me home with an abcess growing already because they were impressed by the junk there when I went in 3 days later. They were glad we caught it so early. I also had to wait several months before they would consider getting it repaired, but by then it had healed itself. I still have a gash where the 4th degree laceration didn't heal back together, but that hasn't caused any issue so far.

Hello!!! I never wanted to talk about this to anyone but after reading this post finally I have . I am seeking help as I developed RVF during my first delivery it was a normal delivery .I noticed passing fesses and gas within 3 days of my delivery I got very little help from my gynecologist as I wasn’t much aware of this problem wanted to take a second opinion from another doctor hence visited another doctor who examined me but didn’t give a proper answer she called my gynecologist and informed him about my visit .He was very upset (reason unknown)of this and said he only he can perform the surgery as he has done the delivery, immediately I was been admitted and got operated .It was a hell as I already had stitches in vagina for my normal delivery and the pain for RVF surgery was killing me I could hardly enjoy the birth of baby .After 1 months I noticed same problem went back to him and He refused to help me , stating nothing much can be done I have to live with it .Bearing the discomfort for 2 years none of the gynecologist wanted to take up my case finally visited gastroenterologist who assured me 70 % of success and surgery was performed ,After the surgery I didn’t pass fesses from my vagina but yes gas I do pass .Now passing gas from vagina has become very frequent and embarrassing too as I have no control over it sometimes so loud in public area now I have stopped going out don’t meet people because of this embarrassment . Its been 12 years now I am very depressed any suggestion for home remedy as I don’t want to go for another one, will any food diet help to control gas. Please help
