Has anyone had weight gain when only taking the singular sometimes? I have been on and off it for several years and in the last year or two i have gained 30 lbs. Over the summer I was working out twice a day for 3 months and lost nothing! Since then I have put on another 10 lbs. I am also on advair and albuterol has anyone had problems with those? I need the medication more when I am working out so I feel like its a loose loose situation but I know the singular has been working for me because when I go off it not only my athesma but also my allergies flair up... I am going off it completely for 2 months and trying claritin again. Hopefully the weight comes off.

I am so relieved to read the posts on weight gain with Singulair. I haven't been able to figure out what was happening with this rapid weight gain and bloating! I have been taking the medicine for 6 months and have gained 15 pounds. I too will be going back to Claritn; this just isn't worth it

I, like others, am so happy to have found this site. I have been on Singulair and Asmanex for several years. And my doctor never mentioned that it would cause weight gain. I have not been able to figure out why I was gaining weight, same areas as the others. I have always been thin, 115 to 120 range and I have put on 20 lbs. over the years. I was also told that it was just my age, 50's. I work out several times a week and lead a very active lifestyle, but with no weight loss. I have never been fat before much less have it on my back area, but now I do! I feel so relieved to know that I'm not crazy! I originally took Advair, but had severe cramps that started with my toes and had worked their way to my knees before I changed to Singulair. I have not had cramps as bad with it but I still have a few. My problem is that I really need medication for my asthma. Prior to going on the meds, my doctor thought I was having a heart attach and admitted me to ICU where I went through all kinds of test and continued to have severe chest pain. If anyone has found a replacement drug that works as well without the weight gain, please let me know. And thanks to all the people that posted a message to let others know that they are not alone.

I am so glad I found this site, too. I have been on Singulair for a few weeks and have not only noticed significant weight gain, but a complete inability to lose weight, even though I am eating healthy and exercising more than I have in months. I know a doctor will never confirm this because the drug does not list this as a side effect but after reading these posts, I am convinced it's the Singular that's causing this. I am going to stop taking it immediately. I will say that it did help me with my allergies, but I am not so sure it's worth this awful side effect.

I was 115 before I started taking singular 4 months ago. Now, I am 129 pounds. I have never watched my weight. I started to exercise and eat less but the weight came on more. I am glad I found this site. Now, I know it is the singular and will stop taking it. My allergies are not that bad and I am mad my doctor put me on it. I hope the weight comes off. I had to go out and buy a new wadrobe.

I'm an asthmatic with bad allergies. I'm pretty much allergic to everything indoors and out. I have been taking singulair for years (it does a good job at reducing my asthma symptoms) and I've been steadily gaining weight for all of this time. I was 120 lbs when I started and 7 years later I am 155 lbs and nothing I do will allow me to lose any significant amount of weight. For a while I exercised 6 hours a week (cardio and weight lifting) and was strictly on the South Beach diet for a year. I lost a whole 5 pounds! I have had blood test after blood test thinking I had a thyroid problem or something. I cannot convince my doctor that my weight gain is not from overeating and lack of exercise. Finding out that singulair may be the culprit makes me want to cry....tears of both relief and sorrow.
I thought I was crazy. I'm glad to know that it probably isn't my fault. But what to do I do about it? I kind of need to keep breathing.

I was 18, female, incredibly active, 110 pounds with a metabolism that ran at the speed of light.
I was put on Pulmacort, gained 25+ pounds, became withdrawn, miserable, suicidal. I developed a strange rash, periods stopped, had massive stomach and muscle cramps. My normally low, healthy blood pressure skyrocketted. My cheekbones dissappeared into my "moon face."
15 pounds gained in two weeks? Not normal. The list of adverse effects goes on.
I stopped the Pulmacort, started Singulair. Some weight came off. Then it crept back on. This time I had anxiety issues, panic attacks, etc. Ridiculous water retention.
This list goes on and on and on....
SO I changed over to a different asthma medication, an older one with minimal side effects. It works like a dream when I'm away from home and the allergens that come from family pets.
Home from school, I took Singulair again for 3 whole days this week - and woke up this morning with a majorly swollen body, moon face, etc. The water retention is back.
Again, blood tests showed no real abnormalities when I was on Pulmacort - I thought maybe it was a thyroid problem. Months later, blood tests showed that my thyroid function was up (thankfully) proving that it WAS affected by the Pulmacort, but not enough to be "abnormal."
Now at 19, I can't seem to shake off this weight. I workout daily, eat minimally, even down to 500 or so calories a day. I've had 2+ hour ballet technique classes daily all year... and yet the weight STILL doesn't budge.
So yes, the drugs will screw up your system. I could go on and on about how much they've effected mine and continue to, even a year after stopping the Pulmacort.
And Advair? The results are supposed to be even worse.

I was looking threw forms to ask if anyone taking singulair or advair or both have experienced bloating. See I've had asthma for about 6 years. I use to take both medications for years. I then lost my health care for a year and a half and went threw horrible withdraws from singulair. But, now I am back on 10mg singulair and 50/100 advair disks and I've been noticing every time I eat I had been getting EXTREMELY BLOATED. I have no idea if this is in relation to the meds but, if anyone has experience the same thing please let me know thanks.

I put my 8 year old son on Singulair for about a month due to his severe allergies. A few weeks later I was looking at him, thinking how he had suddenly grown so big and was starting to look husky, and his legs were looking thick. I was taken aback. He's always been perfectly proportioned. I did not make any connection to Singulair, as I'd never heard of Singulair causing weight gain. Then I took him to his pediatrician and they put him on the scale and exclaimed that he had gained 10 pounds in about a month or so, since he was last in, they couldn't quite believe it, they had to double check their records. I did not make the connection til I came across this web site today. At this point, I suppose the Singulair could have caused his weight gain. I just wonder why it's not listed as a side effect in the literature.

Thanks to everyone who posted something here. I have also been very frustrated lately with my 18 lb weight gain over the past 21 months since I started taking singulair. As a former fitness instructor, I am very familiar with what it takes to have a healthy lifestyle, but it's been increasingly difficult to maintain a healthy weight. I bike an average of 60-80 kilometers a week, eat about 1500 calories a day, and I'm still gaining - all around the middle and on my back. I'll be weaning myself off of this drug starting immediately.

I have been on Singulair for a year and have gained 100lbs. I gained so much so fast that I have stretch marks all over my body! I walk 5 miles per day, work out at Curves 3x per week, am a member of Weight Watchers, and eat so many veggies that my poop is green! Oh, well. At least I have a strong heart! :-)

Yes. You guys have answered my question. I was put on Singulair and am not able to loose weight. I ran 2 miles every day and started weight watchers and the scales do not bluge! Is there another medication out there?

I am glad that I found this site as well. I have been on Zyrtec off and on for a couple of months and just started Singulair one week ago. I noticed today that my mid section is sooo bloated and uncomfortable and I am NEVER like that! I am thin to begin with - 5'7" and 125lbs and run upwards to 40 miles a week plus hike and weight has never been an issue. I don't know if I actually gained any weight but I can tell you that since I began the Zyrtec and now Singulair I am very bloated and uncomfortable. No change in eating habits or working out.. I am going to stop both meds and see what happens. Quite a shame because the Singulair does wonders for my nasal allergies.. I have not been able to find any other medication that helps my nasal allergies like Singulair does..I noticed a difference in my nasal allergies in about 2 days..

I had very very severe asthma as a child, and at age 12 (around the time the drug came out, I think) Singulair was prescribed for me. It was a miracle drug for me! I had been taking it every single day since then until about 3 months ago. I am now 22, and my asthma has become less and less severe with age. Throughout my teenage years I constantly battled my weight. I had always been a thin child, and despite watching what I ate and getting plenty of exercise, I hardly saw any change at all! I was consistently about 30 lbs over weight. I didn't make the connection until I went off the drug a few months ago when I got married and couldn't afford it anymore. Mysteriously, I have been losing weight without even trying! My diet and exercise level both have not changed at all, and I have lost almost 4 inches off of my waist! I've been thrilled, but perplexed at what the change could be, and my husband reminded me I had been off medication. After reading all of these other posts, I am beginning to think that Singulair may have been a big contributing factor to my weight all this time! Oh my heck!
