i started giving sigulair to my daughter when she was 2 years old and she was 26 lb after 7 months she was 39lb :-(
i stoped for her the medicine since 5 months now but she still didnt loose any thing!! she is very active and she doesnt each much, all the fat now is on her belly and back
the doctor keeps saying that singulair has nothing to do with this.
now i want you plz to help me, ppl who stopped taking singulair when did u started loosing weight . and did this happen to your child

I agree with all those who say that singular has put some weight on them. I have been on singular for about a year now, and it's not for asthma, my doctor precribed it for my breast implants so that I will not get scar tissues again as I did on my first inplants, needless to say, it hasn't worked, but for some reason my doctor wants me to keep taking the medication for 3 more months. I noticed that I have gained at least 6 to 8 pounds after taking singular. I excercise 5 times a week, and I am very active, also my heathly eating habits has not changed, so I am convinced that weight gain is also a side effect of the singular medication. As of today, I will NOT be taking the medication any more. This weight gain is driving me crazy and I can't deal with it anymore. I would rather opt to have my implants taken out once and for all. It is not worth it. Thanks to all who has written in about this drug. Now I have finally figured out what was causing my ugly weight gain, and yes it's on my mid section also.

Hey all. I'm a 30-something male, 5'10", and after being diagnosed with asthma in late 2007, I went from 194 to 220 in about six months after I started to take my asthma medication. Over the course of the next year, I gained an additional eight pounds. Originally I was put on Advair 500/50, Singulair, and Albuterol for emergencies. The Advair was decreased to 250/50 after six months, and then changed to Flovent six months after that.
My lifestyle other than the meds did not change. Diet, exercise, all pretty much the same. I've been told that it's just because I'm in my mid-30s and that's my metabolism changing, but that original explosive weight gain seems a bit suspect to me for that.
I know you guys are talking specifically about Singulair, and this whole thread definitely has me concerned that it's the Singulair. However, I also am worried about the Flovent (and Advair before it) because they are cortocosteroids. Steroids in general can lead to weight gain.
It's very depressing. Many years ago, I was really fat from just being a slothful individual, and I had lost quite a bit of weight (from about 265 down to the low 190s, sometimes even the high 180s) by learning the basic skills of eating right and exercising. I too am so depressed about this--I was wondering why I was getting so THICK and fat and stretch marks and big butt despite working out. What about benadryl? Does it make you fat too?

Finding these posts both a relief and a bit depressing. I started on Singular at the end of January weighing a consistent 131 pounds. Less than five weeks later, while increasing exercise and reducing caloric intake, I'm now at 142 lbs. The only other time in my life that I've weighed this much was during or post pregnancy and I've never put on weight this quickly. I stopped taking the drug on Monday, but still feel completely bloated. Hoping the weight will start to come off which is in keeping with the description of many others on this site...mostly around my mid-section, especially my stomach which went from concave when lying on my back to now decidedly rounded. Maybe there are other reasons and possible this is all a tremendous coincidence, but nothing about my life, stress level, eating habits or exercise routine have deteriorated in the past 35 days other than starting on this drug. Will write again if I see any improvement now that I'm off Singular. Are people finding this has caused a permanent change, or that you return to your old selves after being off for a while? I'll admit, I'm more than a little nervous.

Singulair has caused me to gain 10 pounds in about 7-8 weeks. I can't get it off and I am a healthy eater! It helps my asthma but I am seeing the doctor about another alternative as I can't stand the weight gain which will only increase, in my opinion. I think the company who makes Singulair has been totally aware of the weight gain which effects many people on this drug, but has down-played it as most people would choose an alternative med, if it helped their asthma, :'( and DID NOT ADD lots of weight to their bodies.

Has anyone lost weight after quitting Singulair? I plan to quit taking my nightly dose tonight and was wondering if these side effects will go away at some point - hopefully sooner than later!

I have been taking Singulair for several years and have gained 50 pounds. I did not know this medication had caused the weight gain. I am so tired of having it and persistently trying to lose it. I have been walking on a treadmill for over a year 2 and 1/4 miles 5 days a week and can not lose the weight. My eating habits have not changed. If anything I eat less and eat better foods. I am finally thinking that it is the singulair. I am bloated in the mid section as many of you are....sometimes look about 6 months pregnant. I am going to stop this med and see if it is the culprit. Are there alternatives for the asthma that do not cause weight gain? This has drastically helped my asthma and I guess that's why I didn't think about the weight. Advair also caused weight gain with me as does the albuterol.

I took myself off Singulair 1.5 years ago after taking it for 3 years and experiencing 30+pounds of weight gain. Since going off Singulair, I have increased my workouts (4-5x/wk for 45mins) and decreased my calories, but have seen no significant weight loss. I am no longer gaining weight , thank goodness!, but I have not been able to lose any either.

Oh my gosh, I have been on it for only 3 weeks and I have noticed an increase in my midsection and back. It has been driving me nuts. I specifically looked up "does singular cause weight gain" and found people with the same problem.
It also caused me to feel extremely depressed, anxious and moody. I'm getting off of it.

My son in 14 years old and until 8 years old and started Zyrtec and Singular he was UNDER weight, now he is at least 15lbs over.
He eats less and better than anyother Teens I know and is active. Doctors told us these meds do not cause weight gain but they
are full of it. During the low allergy and cold months(not many) I bought a pill splitter and have him cut the 10mg in 1/2 and he
will lose about 6-8 lbs during that time. I would take him off totally but he is less sick and uses rescue inhaler alot less while he
is on it. Hopefully, someone will get through to the Pharms and they can come up with something that doesn't cause this. I
think its like anyother antihistamine and it actually slows your heart rate which would effect metabolism.

antihistamines cause increased appetite and weight gain. when i stopped taking my zyrtec (had been on daily) i lost 8lbs in a month doing nothing different. looked it up and found documentation that it can cause a gain of 1kg (2.2lb) every 2 weeks. many folks take those in addition to singulair- most likely the culprit

I am so glad I found this site. I thought I was going crazy. I am only 5'4 and have always been small. I have asthma and was diagnosed with copd. I started taking Singulair and I started becoming bloated and was gaining weight even though I was exercising daily. I was having crazy crazy dreams!!! I stopped the med a few days ago and the weight has come off. I will be calling my doctor and asking for something else.
