Hello, I'm so glad I found this thread. I started Prozac May 2015 and at first lost weight. I was 127 and got down to 119. I follow a very tight food plan (weighed/measured food only, no carbs, no alcohol, etc) and I always work out 5 x a week. My weight creeped up a bit and since Jan of this year I'm up 7 lbs. This freaked me out as my diet is VERY tight (no carbs/sweets ever) so I'm shocked there has been a 2 lb gain each month. My dosage was only 10mg. I stopped taking it last Fri (4/1) and I want to know exactly when does the weight drop? My thyroid is checked ever 6 months and I'm hypothyroid but its regulated. When do you see see the weight drop? After how many months?

I was on Prozac for 3 years after my father passed away. I gained 30lbs over that time. When I went off, I cleaned up my eating and worked out with a trainer 3 days a week. It took me a year to lose the 30lbs of weight.

This is exactly what happened to me ! When I was 17 I was prescribed Prozac for anxiety/depression. Im 5'11 and usually weighted 130 (male). The first year I went up to 180 (not changing my eating habits or exercise). The medication wasn't working as well so they up'd my dose to 40mgs. Now 19 years old I weight 225 and look like I'm pregnant and my face looks round like the moon! I'm so frustrated...

That must be frustrating. Is there opportunity for.improvement in your nutrition? Have you avoiding processed foods, especially sugars and refined grains and focusing on non starchy veggies, fruitd, lean proteins , healthy fats ??
Nutritiom is 75% of the fitness equation, but exercise is also very important for bosy composition. Start doong some HIIT workputs a couole times a week for 15-30 minites each and walking more..
Buy a pedometer and work up 10,000 steps or more daily.

You can overcome the effects of the drug by. Making lifestyle changes. You are not doomed to being soft and oberweight!!
Look at the blessings in your life , feel gratitude then decide to make it even better.

Many blessings to you.

Hi! (First of all, im from sweden so I appologize for bad english). Im 27 years old, female. Been taking Prozac for 5 years. Over this period of time i have gained 25 KG (about 50 lbs). Just like many of you, i have never been overweight my intire life. I was one of these lucky people who could eat whatever i wanted to and not gain. If i thought about what i ate, i emmidiatily lost weight (we're talking days or a week). My weight gain started after about 6 months on prozac. All the suddenly i had alot of fat on my stomach, looks like im pregnant. It doesnt look like i have alot of fat. Nothing that "hangs", instead I look like a filled waterballoon, everything is swollen. I stopped taking prozac almost 3 months ago, stopped drinking soda and eat healthier, still not a single pound lost. Im now starting to realize my metobalism may be forever damaged.. ive tried pills that are supposed to increase your metabolism (thermacut, chiliburner) and a pill that makes your body get rid of water. Still nothing. It should be easier for me to lose weight now that im overweight, but no. I have never have to struggle this much to lose weight. Will i ever lose weight? Or should i just accept that 5 years on prozac ruined me forever?

Hi, everyone.

I wanted to stop in and give a quick update on the post I made six months ago.

As noted previously, I was starting to give up trying to lose weight since I wasn't successful with it at all. By around February, I had completely given up, but I decided to weigh myself one day just to see where I was at. To my surprise, I had found I lost 8 pounds. What was interesting about this was not only had I not been dieting and beating myself up with intense exercises anymore, but I seemed to have lost a lot of the weight around my middle. My pants mostly fit the same, which is likely why I didn't notice the 8 pound loss, but my stomach seemed flatter. I believe some of the weight gain was bloat.

Afterwards, I continued to eat sensible and exercise, and as of writing this I'm down almost 12 pounds. The weight loss has been slow. Maybe half a pound every two weeks, but it seems to stay off once it's gone.

I stopped taking Prozac at the end of July 2015 and I didn't see any weight loss until mid-February of 2016. I wanted to give you guys hope that if Prozac made me gain weight and I'm starting to lose it, then you can lose it too. For me, it just took an incredible amount of time, even though I already have what I consider to be a healthy lifestyle.

My mother was on Lexapro and she too gained weight. Her doctor didn't actually poo-poo her weight gain concerns, but instead told her the only thing that will help is time and eating lots of leafy vegetables because that will help flush out your system.

Please hang in there. I consider myself to have an average metabolism at best, but I'm now within seven pounds of my pre-Prozac weight. If I can come through this, you can too.

Take care!

P.S. As a side note, did anyone here lose hair on Prozac? I've experienced what I think is telogen effluvium after taking this medication and I'm wondering if anyone else had the same experience.

Just seeing you were on Seroquel. I gained 12kg on it within 4 -6 weeks and another 8kg in the following years. I switched to Prozac in 2014 after 11 years on Seroquel and gained all the weight I managed to lose the year before back in no time.
I finished tapering off a month ago and am now trying to get in shape again and control my mood with bits of daily exercise to start with.
Prozac was tough on me for more than just the weight gain, but I can so relate to being a happier person on it.
The one thing I'd suggest to anyone here is to be gentle with themselves.

I was pretty hard on myself with exercise and weight loss, which just put me under too much stress. On a physical level too. I encountered a rarely talked about phenomenon while training for a half marathon a few years ago: I gained fat as soon as I hit the stage where I ran above 10km several times a week. It wasn't muscle or water. It happens to more people than I thought and had to do with the body trying to protect itself. I recommend interval cardio and weights, but be aware of what your body needs, as opposed to what your aesthetic needs demand. Good luck to all of us.

I was afraid to wean off also, but you can always go back on. I took 20 mg for 4 months, dropped to 20mg every other day for a week and then stopped. I stopped 3 weeks ago and feel great! I just hit a tough point in my life with things happening all at once so needed help through it. But my stomach is so bloated! I've taken 4 pregnancy tests to be sure that's not it! (I was in a relationship until 4 months ago). Good luck! From what I've read, Prozac messes with blood sugar levels. Aim for fruit for something sweet and try a supplements that balances blood sugar levels. Cinnamon and chromium are great!

I've been on Prozac for over a year and it was only in the last 3 months or so my weight starting climbing. Now I've gained about 30 pounds and I'm very bloated. I also crave sugary things, especially cereal. I eat several bowls a day . I tapered off and I'm hoping I can get this weight off because it's certainly not helping my mood any

I was on Prozac for about 15 months for depression and anxiety, and gained 12 lbs (quite noticeable on my 5 foot frame, pre-prozac weight was 108). I stopped taking the Prozac 8 weeks ago, as I didn't feel I needed it for my mood anymore and I was so frustrated by the weight gain--I've always been a light eater and a regular exerciser, these habits didn't change so I really believe the Prozac is the reason to blame. I did not lose any weight at all for the first 6 weeks off the Prozac, but the in the last 2 weeks I have lost one pound each... I am so hoping that this weight will finally start to drop! What a terrible side effect, I will never go back on Prozac again.

Me too. I started Prozac because mom was dying. I went up to 30mg and after she passed I am now starting to wein off the drug. I' was a size 6 upon my first dose. Now I am a size 12. Yes, its awful. I've been through this before. The only way I can drop this weight, for myself, is to get off the antidepressant. That's a hard thing to do when depression is overwhelming. Get to a doc. All these antidepressants put serious weight on you. My 'thing' was to get off the meds and so 1/2 hour of 'dancing to the oldies' every day. Then I got more energy from dancing and I started to walk too. With all that exercise, my appitite started to normalize and when I ate- I only ate protein and veggies and only 2 fruits a day. I would include very little carbs. There you have it...I lost 20 pound last time....and now...I have to go through it all again. ugh....Why cant they invent a drug that doesn't DO THIS TO US!?

SOOOO thankful for this post. I have always been small - 5'2 and size 4 but I currently weigh 130lbs! Before Prozac I weight 110. Granted I was 17 and I am now 25 so some weight gain is to be expected but I've been having a hard time losing weight. I went on Prozac at 17 and didn't notice any significant weight gain ever, seemed like I was slowly gaining but always found it SO hard to lose weight no matter what I did. About a year ago I read that Prozac could be the cause. In this last year I've really amped up my workout routine and healthy eating and I haven't lost any weight (in fact I went from 124 to 130!) but I think I gained muscle and I notice myself being more toned. However my tummy WILL NOT go away!
I decided a few months ago to taper off Prozac and have been officially off for 4 weeks now. So far no luck losing weight but really really hoping if I keep at it it will happen. Again, I'm not overweight but I work out 3-5 times a week and eat healthily most of the time so I would like my body to reflect that.
