Hi, I'm a 39 year old woman. I went off the pill after about 10 years. I had my normal period after my last 21 days on the pill. About two weeks later I was out to dinner and noticed when I got up I was covered in so much blood in was practically down to the knees of my jeans. This happened in less than than 30 minutes as I used the bathroom earlier and would have noticed any bleeding. I thought it was just related to going off the pill, got cleaned up and went to bed. My husband woke me up in the middle of the night, are bed was a pool of blood. Blood and giant clots were dripping all over the floor as I tried to get to the bathroom. I ended up passing out for a short time. Are bedroom and bathroom looked like something from a bad horror movie there was so much blood. After that night the heavy bleeding was over and I'm just spotting some. The thing is a week after I'm very sore in my vaginal area. I think I might be swollen and it is slightly , uncomfortable when I go pee. Any ideas as to what's going on? Please don't say go to the doctor. I have no health insurance.

I endured the same problem once I stopped receiving the depo provera birth control injection which caused me to have severe leg cramps, weight gain and shedding of my hair. My doctor said that it was my period trying to get back on track since it stopped completely while I was on the birth control. Just to be on the safe side go to the doctor anyway and make certain that it isn't something else. Remember we only get one body so take good care of it! If you have no health insurance try to locate a public or free clinic in your area.
You may also locate one by asking personnel at your nearest department of human services agency. Hope this helps and good luck!

that sounds awful. maybe you have uterine fibroids (they can cause very, very heavy bleeding). also, regarding lack of insurance, go to planned parenthood. they charge according to an individual's economic situation. definitely get a checkup; that much blood sounds dangerous.

I had this same problem for about 3 weeks after coming off the pill, and then my next two periods again were also very heavy. I went to the doctor and was told it's just your body adjusting to the hormones, that the pill is often prescribed to reduce heavy flows, and coming off it can have the opposite effect.
He also said if it goes on for longer then the first 3 periods after coming off birth control, and it doesn't normalise, THEN see a doctor.
