Hello! My sister is 2 months post partum and she has developed something called deep vein thrombosis. I know it has something to do with blockage of the veins. Before she was found to have this, her thigh was really swollen and it hurt, that place was really hot and she also had a fever. Can you explain to me what this is and tell me about the outcomes and treatments. Thank you

Hello! The goal of treatment of DVT is to prevent formulation of a pulmonary embolus, which can appear as a DVT complication. She will be probably given heparin in the vein and oral warfarin. This is what my father got but he wasn’t breastfeeding. They may give something else to your sister. This is for quick anticoagulation and treatment of the clot. These drugs need to be taken for longer periods of time. It is said that DVT resolves with no difficulties but it doesn’t mean that it won’t happen again. This pulmonary embolus I was mentioning usually doesn’t appear if DVT is appropriately treated but could be life threatening if it does. I hope everything turns out to be fine with your sister.
