I have been on thyroxine 75mg for a year and a half and in the past 6 months or so I have been having bowel problems and stomach problems also anxiety problems. something is not right with my body.
I came across this site last night and will be going back to my doctor and getting the tests recommended in the article. If they are correct I am guessing I need a different medication.

try taking kelp, it contains iodine which we need to manufacture our own thyroid hormones. most countries are classed as iodine deficient and flouride added to drinking water displaces iodine from the body. the body only creates antibodies to its own gland because its own gland isnt acting normal- and that is because of a lack of iodine. try it, it works and will help alleviate the symptoms of hypothyroidism

Yes, there are a lot of papers linking gastric problems to abnormal thyroxine levels, use Google Scholar to find peer reviewed papers. I had terrible stomach issues and then was diagnosed as hyperthyroid. I then went hypothyroid (Hashimotos) and my stomach got a little better, then when I placed on Levothyroxine my gastric problems escalated again. I have to eat or I get a terrible burning pain - worse at night. I have seen several doctors and a gastro - they all said GERD, but I went on PPI's (nexium) with no resolution. It is now strongly suspected I have bile reflux, I have a scan next week. My advice, watch what you eat... chocolate makes me worse, as does garlic... so many foods reduce smooth muscle tone and hence relaxes gastric sphincters... the LES and pyloric. Too many foods to list! Things that help me is coffee and I have started using pseudoephedrine... these are stimulants that enhances smooth muscle tone. I regularly wake with terrible burning 1-3 times a night and have to eat and drink milk to relieve it.

There is a positive correlation between free T4 levels and gastrin (stomach hormone) which increases stomach acid, increases stomach motility and decreases smooth muscle tone (sphincters). Thyroxine also influences the parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous systems.

I started to cut down the Levo, and had three solid nights sleeps... unfortunately what is left f my thyroid kicked back in. I have now been off Levo for 2 months and I am still alive and kicking. I have joint aches, but my stomach is more manageable. looking forward to a diagnosis after a year of this rubbish! I have not been able to work.

Good luck everyone with gastric and thyroxine issues.

Karen,

I am having such Horrible stomach pain, and your symptoms sound similar to mine. Can you tell me all the symptoms you are having and whether they have found out what it is and how you are feeling today? I sometimes feel like I could have stomach cancer.

Hi I have only been diagnosed with hypothyroid recently. My TSH levels apparently very high 50+ also very high antibodies. I. Ever really suffered any Symptoms, that I was aware of, I was tired it thought was due to very long working hours at high altitude. I have been prescribed 100mg of eltroxin. I have only been on it for 3 weeks and I feel worse now than I ever did before. My stomach is in bits. I used have healthy appetite and could honestly eat anything without a problem. But since starting medication I have poor appetite and very bad stomach discomfort. High in stomach under rib cage my stomach also feels raw and bloated very bad wind and pain keeps me awake at night. I am considering stopping medication. I thought medicine should make you feel better not worse.

I had Rad iodine in 2009.  Began meds Levothyroxine in 2010 down to about 75mcg.  Changed drs.  BP med changed.  In 2012 my entestinal tract started giving me real fits.  Couldn't leave the house .  One dose of meds would be like a laxative right away for hours.  Had meds changed to Armour Thyroid.  Same thing happens.  I am allergic to BOTH meds no matter the dose.  I stopped each med (which ever I was on) for up to one week.  I got true relief - no symptoms.  As soon as I started meds, it returned.  I even cut the dose in half...still it was relentless.  Now trying to reach my doc.  Don't think he believes me.  Says my labs are good.  They might be good but I'm definitely not.  I can't live this way.  I will go without the meds if I have to.
