When trying to treat underactive thyroid naturally, essential oils provide a number of useful benefits to help combat the fatigue, depression, memory problems and hair loss associated with your condition. What oils should you try to incorporate daily?

Hypothyroidism is a disease prevalent in modern society in up to 5 percent of cases in developed countries and even higher than 10 percent of the population in developing countries [1]. Subclinical hypothyroidism may be even more likely and can be as high as 15 percent even in developed countries [2]. When you are diagnosed with an underactive thyroid, the first-line treatment consists of a lifetime dependence on Levothyroxine or similar substitutes of artificial thyroid hormones [3]. Thankfully, there are some different alternative therapies that those suffering from hypothyroidism can elect to follow to avoid Levothyroxine. These therapies can range from developing a hypothyroidism diet plan to taking natural supplements or even essential oils to help treat your thyroid dysfunction.

Essential Oils For Hypothyroidism

Essential oils are the natural product of plant products that give a plant its particular odor and flavor. They can be used in perfumes, natural flavoring, aromatherapy and a treatment option for your hypothyroidism. [4] Examples of essential oils include spearmint, peppermint, lavender, and sassafras are just a few of the many extracts that industry uses in numerous consumer products [5].

Peppermint oil

Peppermint is an essential oil for hypothyroidism and can help alleviate the symptoms associated with hypothyroidism. Peppermint has been used for centuries as a way to prevent hair loss, a natural symptom associated with hypothyroidism [6].  Peppermint can also have some anti-inflammatory properties and is also used for irritable bowel syndrome. This disease is often correlated with hypothyroidism and can help patients cope with their symptoms [7]. What is more, peppermint does not have a list of dangerous side effects that medical community often associates with other medications. Peppermint oil acts as a stimulant and can combat the fatigue and tiredness that often correlates with an underactive thyroid. The easiest way to utilize this preparation is to add one drop of extract to a hot tea and consume daily.

Rosemary oil

Rosemary is another essential oil for hypothyroidism. Like peppermint, it can be used to fight the effects of hair loss and well as bloating and irritable bowel syndrome but rosemary can also be utilized in another way. When patients are diagnosed with hypothyroidism, they often experience cognitive decline and impaired concentration as their metabolism is reduced.

Rosemary is recommended in order to increase mental sharpness.

One study was done to determine the benefits in an elderly population suffering from impaired memory and it was determined that rosemary has a dose-dependent response. In low quantities, around 750 mg daily, rosemary significantly improved memory response in the elderly population while in higher amounts, it made memory capacity worse. [8

Grapefruit seed extract

Grapefruit seed extract is another essential oil for hypothyroidism. This compound can improve stress levels, fight depression, improve memory function and boost your metabolism. These are all likely deficits when you suffer from an underactive thyroid

The one problem with grapefruit oil is that it down-regulates (turns off) necessary enzymes in your liver that help digest medications, so it is important to ask your doctor if your medications are still safe in tandem with this oil.

One study was done to determine if grapefruit seed oil had any effect on the absorption of levothyroxine. At the conclusion of the research, scientists discovered that the grapefruit seed oil did slightly delay the absorption of the active thyroid hormone, but there was no statistically significant difference between the amount of thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) with or without the oil. This conclusion demonstrates the grapefruit seed oil essential oil does not interfere with the medications used to lower your TSH levels to fight hypothyroidism. [9]

Lavender oil

Lavender is the last but not least essential oil for hypothyroidism worth mentioning. Lavender is a strong oil that patients can use in a variety of preparations including topical, oral, or as a vapor.

It is useful when fighting anxiety, insomnia, hair loss, and stress; all of which are likely to be seen with hypothyroidism.

One study concluded that after seven days of daily exposure to lavender, there was a reduced response to anxiety and stress in the tested population [10]. Another promising benefit of the scent of lavender is that subjects tested were found to have improved spatial memory that not only can be problematic in patients with hypothyroidism, but also with more severe conditions like Alzheimer's disease [11]. Even in an aerosol component, lavender has been found to be a stimulus to the limbic system, the part of your brain associated with feeling happy. Studies find that those who routinely inhale lavender feel less depressed and more energetic; pretty impressive considering all you have to do is light a candle to notice these effects. [12]
