Hi, guest.

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) can indeed increase the risk of urinary tract infections (UTIs), and antibiotics like Ciprofloxacin (Cipro) are commonly prescribed to treat these infections.

The duration of antibiotic treatment can vary depending on the severity of the infection, the patient's medical history, and how they respond to the medication. Generally, UTIs in men are treated with antibiotics for a longer duration compared to women, often ranging from 7 to 14 days, sometimes longer in complicated cases. However, the exact duration should be determined by a healthcare professional.

Since your urine strip test still shows positive for nitrites, which indicates the presence of bacteria, it's important to:

  1. Complete the Prescribed Course: It's crucial to complete the full course of antibiotics as prescribed, even if symptoms improve, to ensure the infection is fully treated and to reduce the risk of antibiotic resistance.

  2. Follow-Up Tests: Your doctor may suggest follow-up urine tests after completing the antibiotic course to ensure the infection has cleared.

  3. Manage BPH: Managing BPH effectively can reduce the risk of recurrent UTIs. This might involve lifestyle changes, medications, or other treatments as advised by your healthcare provider.

  4. Watch for Symptoms: If you experience a return of symptoms or new symptoms, contact your healthcare provider immediately.

Remember, antibiotic treatment and management of urinary tract infections should always be guided by a professional. Self-treatment or altering the course of treatment without medical advice can have serious consequences.
