I have treated all 4 in my family for pinworms (Vermox). My husband and son never showed any symptoms. My 5 yo daughter and I did. I never experienced anal itching, only vaginal. I went to ob/gyn and told him symtoms - he did pap and tested for all std's - all came back negative - he is the one who prescribed Vermox. I no longer see any in stool - but still having vaginal itching at times (mostly night time) - now six weeks later. My daughter also complians of her "tutu" itching. All I read online says that vaginal pinworms will usually die on their own. My question - is there any thing I can do to treat v pinworms??

Hi:
Please get your 5 year old to a doctor right away. Don't delay....PLEASE. I would be concerned about the general health practices in your family. It is imperative that you educate yourself about good hygiene and how the spread of infections, etc. can be prevented. Things like sharing towels, not washing hands after bathroom use, etc. can be fatal to family health. Infections, etc. can and will spread to every family member. If your children are contracting adult infections, you have a big problem. Your children may have to live with devistating results of infections for the rest of their lives, because of unwise family practices. PLEASE get information and PLEASE get your little girl to a doctor for treatment. Then follow the treatment and change your sanitary/health practices at home. You might want to find out how to get your home professionally sanitized either with the proper products or with a professional cleaner so that you can start all over. Please let me know what happens. I hope that you are on your way to the doctor with your daughter.

Even though this message is a little old to reply to- I wanted to anyway for people in the future that may come across it. "dsdesk" really needs to do more research before making you feel nasty about this situation.... websites, doctors and pharmacists will all tell you that MOST preschool age children get this at least once in their life! They get it from playing in the dirt or touching other surfaces that have the eggs on it from other children that have touched it previously. When a child has pin worms and scratches their anus, microscopic eggs get under their finger nails and the eggs stick to any surface they touch afterwards. Pin worms are EXTREMELY easy to get and once one person in the household gets it, you (in most cases) all get the same problem unless treated early enough. Vaginal worms isn't as common, however, it can happen. If you do your research (which you should before you try to educate others on it) then you would know that its not an " adult infection" its actually MOSTLY found in preschool children (like I stated earlier). The statement: " I would be concerned about the general health practices in your family......" is c**p...... do your research. While personal hygiene is of course important, it is not the leading CAUSE of this.... proper and CONSTANT hand washing is the key. As far as treatment goes, a doctor can prescribe medication or you can buy some OTC provided that the child is not under the age of 2 years old. As for the mother, you must consult a doctor if you are pregnant or nursing. Yes this problem seems very gross but I assure you, it is VERY VERY common and very easy to get rid of once it is properly diagnosed. I worked in a pharmacy for quite sometime- I would know what kind of medication is commonly prescribed..... As far as the vaginal worms lasting longer, I'm really not sure why that is. Your not the first person I have heard say that. I know that the medication works by starving the worms of the glucose they need to thrive.... they then die and are excreted by means of a bowl movement but I'll have to check in and ask more questions to find out why the vaginal worms seem to outlast the others???

Apply hair styling gel, the kind with no alcohol. Then lie down in apply a thick layer of baby powder. This weights the worms down so they can't move. If you have a lot of itching you may have developed a fungus from constant mositure due to frequent washing. Use an antifungal cream if this is the case. Avoid cortisone due to its side effects.

Just no. You are so uninformed to think that pinworms are an adult infection and you just need to admit you haven't read up on it. I had at least three cases of it before I was 12. You are taking this way too serously, they will just die on their own and if you can't wait that long then just get some pinworm Medicine from the pharmacist.

It's not so drastic. Probably your daughter picked up a very common childhood problem of thread or pin worms. She most likely passed it to you. I have the same problem with my daughter. The eggs are minuscule and get on your hands/nails and then into your mouth, eventually hatch and wriggle near your rectum and lay eggs which make you scratch, eggs get on your nails and cycle repeats. Rectum is very close to cagina so easy for them to travel. Vermox treats it but you must take second dose 14 days later to kill cycle.

I know that this is a little old to reply to as well, but thank you so MUCH for saying something! "dsdesk" didn't seem to know the topic fully! Pinworms are VERY common amongst school aged children, unfortunately.

If you have animals in the house, they can be a source too. My daughter brought a cat home and we all got pin worms. It was really hard to rid the cat of pin worms. I had to treat the Cat every 3 days, with a puppies wormer (pyrantel pamoate) and treat the family every week for 2 months. It's crazy hard to get rid of. It's easy to check your animals. While they are sleeping, just left their tail and the worms will be there. Pyrantel pamoate is the only animal wormer that I could find that would treat pin worms successfully. Hope this help other's...;-)

Cats and dogs cannot get pinworms. Maybe the eggs were on her fur, but pinworms only live in human intestines. At least that's what the nurse said...

Also, someone already said this, but it's SO important. Make sure you take the pinworm medicine again after two weeks! Mine even came back after that, so I just treated every two weeks for three months just to be safe. After that, I had a bacterial infection, so make sure you're careful not to be too thorough trying to wash the worms out with soap. My OBGYN gave me some medicine, and I'm fine now.
