According to the American Cancer Society Breast, cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths among women worldwide. About 465,000 women died of breast cancer globally in 2007, and 1.3 million new cases were diagnosed. Scientists are doing everything in their power to rise awareness of prevention and point out the risk factors.

A study of more than 30,000 post-menopausal women found that plenty of vigorous exercise protected against breast cancer even among those who were not at a higher risk. The study showed that strenuous activity cut a healthy, older woman's breast cancer risk by 30 per cent.

The physical activity included anything from housework such as scrubbing floors to running and the effect was clearest among lean women.
It has been known for a while that being overweight puts women at increased risk of breast cancer but the researchers showed that exercising was even beneficial to lean women without the increased risk of breast cancer.

In their study, the researchers used questionnaires to determine how often the women exercised vigorously. All women were healthy when the study began. Eleven years after, the researchers found that overall the volunteers who exercised most were 13% less likely to have developed breast cancer.

The reduced risk was even higher — 30 percent — when the researchers compared only women of normal weight.

Although strenuous activity had such amazing results, non-vigorous activity such as light housework, walking, hiking and easy jogging, on the other hand, did not seem to offer any protection against breast cancer.

Reasons why haven't been studied in this round but previous studies have shown that working out reduces estrogen levels —a known risk factor for the disease — and protects the body's general immune system.


I am just wondering how vigorous a woman has to exercise in order to reap the benefit of breast cancer protection, since non-vigorous activities do not seem to offer any protection. Does she have to exercise until she starts to sweat? How high does she have to raise her heart rate? Is aerobic exercise more beneficial than resistance exercise? What about premenopausal women? They can get breast cancer too.
