Please help!  I went off the Nuva Ring 4 weeks ago and have gained 5 pounds in the last 2 weeks.  I have felt bloated constantly.  My jeans, and even worse yet, dress pants (which typically are almost as comfortable as sweat pants) are so tight I can't stand it!  I finally searched this and see there are a lot of people that experience weight gain after going off the Nuva Ring.  Does anyone know how to stop the weight gain?  Thanks for your help!

Hi ladies...It's been a year since I went off NuvaRing (I was only on it for 3 months) and I have not been able to lose the inches around my waist. I'm not going to mention my weight because I've been going to the gym and have gained some muscle. My waist used to be 29" before NuvaRing and 1 year after I stopped it's still fluctuating around 31 to 32. I still can't fit in my size 6 pants and dresses and now wear a size 10. It's frustrating because the fat is concentrated in my midsection. I look and feel pregnant. I've started to take chaste berry again because I think I have an estrogen dominance. I've taken chaste berry before but not nearly long enough to see results. Will post back in the fall. Sorry no good news here but I figured I'd update anyway.

Hello,

I have just stop using the Nuvaring as well about 4 weeks ago. I have not experienced weight gain YET but have experienced a couple of lbs weight lose although it looks like I have gained weight but I believe it is due to bloating and water retention. I am 21 and I have had my period for 12 yrs now and have never missed a period. My last period was over a month ago, I have gone in for pregnancy test as well and they have been negative. I have also experienced the sore breasts and increased blemishes as well ; I have no idea whats going on with my body. Has anyone else experienced a missed period?

I have been on the nuvaring for years, and came off it about 3-4 weeks ago, and have gained 7 pounds already.  I am very worried about it.  I have never gained weight that fast, and I have not changed my diet.  When I saw all these other concerns, I called the FDA.  They could not find any reported problems on side effects from stopping the nuvaring, only side effects while being on the nuvaring.  Please, please if you truly believe that your weight gain is from stopping the nuva ring.  You NEED to report it.  You can go to fda.gov and to the right there is a link to report a serious problem.  You can also go on Pubmed.gov and search for literature related to your problem.  If you do not report this, then they can not do anything about it.  Please be pro-active so they can check into this!!!

I also gained weight from the Nuvaring! I actually lost about 6 pounds when I first went on the ring.  Then, when I went off about 8 months later, I never thought much about it until I randomly checked the scale and saw that I had gained about five pounds! It didn't stop there, either! I gained about 5-8 more pounds! I started eating healthy, and going to the gym, which I NEVER did before in my life! Nothing helped! I went back on about five months after that and actually lost maybe 8 pounds. Then, due to heart palpatations, I had to go off the Nuvaring and have gained it all back! I am going to try and see if I can get blood drawn to test my hormones, because I haven't had a period in three months and I had an ovarian cyst! I never had one before that I know of! I took many pregnancy tests and all were negative! Not sure what to do, but I am with all of you, it is SO frusturating and messes up your self-image! Especially when you try so hard and see no results!

I had also been on and off Nuva Ring since 2007. It seemed that every time I went off, the scale numbers went up. Eventually one year they went back down, only right before I re - started it again. It took a good 8 mos. until my weight went back to normal.
Has anyone noticed measurement changes ie: waist size etc? I only notice bigger boobs.
I've been off it again for the last 4 months and have done cleanses, exercise daily and even joined weight watchers- only to get discouraged......
Has anyone tried the HCG diet to see if it resets their hormones?
Also I tried Maca- as suggested by a health professional to balance hormones, but when I googled it- the common use of Maca is to help people Gain weight! So I stopped.
Soon Im sure it will go back to normal! Ive gained a good 10lbs in 2 mos- but Ive weighed the same amount for 15 years- so no more scale for me!

I just went off the Nuva Ring almost two months ago, as of today I'm up six pounds my waist is heavily bloated.
Once I noticed that the number on the scale was climbing I started the food diary and increased the number of days that I go to the gym (3-4 up to 5). My BMI is still within a healthy level but all of these post's are alarming, I had no clue while going on the ring that weight gain was a side effect of going off. I also consulted my OBGYN before going off and her only advice was to avoid pregnancy for three months after going off the pill to help prevent a miscarriage. Now I'm experiencing weight gain as are many others and hearing about fertility issues from the ring on blogs. This is all alarming and scary, I will deter my friends from going on the ring!

The same exact thing is happening to me! I'm 33 and was on the Nuva ring for about 8 years. I went off it about a month ago and  immedietely gained weight (6-10 lbs in a matter of two weeks). I'm slender, small framed and have always stayed at a consistant/healthy weight. I work as a dog walker (averaging about 15 miles a day) and eat super healthy. Nothing in my lifestyle or diet has changed. The NR is the only thing I can think of as the culprit.

 SOME HELP/ADVICE

I went off of the Nuvaring when I was 20 years old, and in a matter of three months I gained over 30 pounds. I was a size 0 to 1 my entire life and was always active being a dancer. I was still dancing at the time of the weight gain and it almost destroyed me both physically and emotionally. I connected the weight gain to the Nuvaring but my doctor would not listen. Even after gaining the weight I was still not considered "heavy or fat" but I was compared to what was natural for me. I began working out even more vigorously and eating very little with no improvement. After about 7 months, I found a new doctor and I had my hormones tested. My body had quit producing progesterone on its own because it had become so dependent on the hormone coming from the Nuvaring. I started taking hormonal supplements which did help me lose some weight and helped with my overall mood. After determining that my body will always need some form of hormonal supplement I decided to just go back on the ring for the time being. I have since lost most of the weight I gained and I have been back on the Nuvaring for over a year now. I am currently discussing other birth control options with my doctor because I still do not think it is a good idea to be on the Nuvaring even though while I am on it I feel better physically and emotionally.

I recommend having your doctor test your hormone levels of estrogen, estrodial, and progesterone. I am willing to bet you are experiencing the same deficiency that I am. I hope that this helps!

When working out you always gain before you loose. The trainer should have explained that to you.

I had the same problem. Turns out it was all water weight gain. My thyroid levels were all messed up and after getting them leveled out and taking a diurectic to get rid of the water weight I am slowly losing my bloat!

Does anyone have advice for this. I read most of these posts and I also noticed the weight gain going off Nuvaring. I didn't realize it until last week the it could be because I went off birth control. The other part is what I am really struggling with. I am soooo on edge all the time. It can't seem to shack it. Does anyone know if it just goes away after awhile, when you body has better adjusted? I am not pregnant, but I am experiencing weight gain, moodiness, oily skin on my face, and a feeling of jet lag. Any advice as to if this gets better or what I need to do to control???? I am trying to keep up exercising and eating right, but still feeling it today. Help!!!!

oh my goodness, i agree. i dont know if this is just how i am with all birth controls but my weight seems to constantly be fluctuating with nuva ring and it seems to be mostly in my stomach. When i first went on it i didnt notice much of a change but after a while I started to gain weight. Eventually it seemed as if I was stable (even though I was 15 lbs heavier then b4 i started the NV) and decided to start working out. AFter about 2 and a half months of working out atleast 5 times per week for an hr to an hr a half a day and eating far more healthy, I became frustrated that I had only lost about 3 lbs. However that was a great improvement compared to what happened very soon after I went off the NV. After removing it as usual after 3 weeks I decided I wanted to start a new birth control with the IUD but in order for my health insurance to cover it I had to wait about 3 weeks to get the new birth control. Im going to the doctor tomorrow but since this 3 week break off of the NV have gained about 8 pounds despite eating healthier then ever and working out even harder. The worst part is it appears to be all gained in my stomach, and it doesnt just seem like water weight...it seems like straight up fat. I dont know what the problem is here but im 5'10 and have always been around 135-140 at the most and have never had a problem losing weight if i tryed until now. im 21, and it shouldnt b this hard....since starting NV in february and stopping in agust, I have gained 20 pounds and rising....not cool.... I want to go on the hormone free IUD but not if its going to make the situation worse in the long run. with a puffy neck and a chubby stomach i just dont feel like myself anymore...not sure what i should do since my doctor has not had any helpful advise so far.

Same thing happened to my daughter, it's been two years and she struggles to lose the 25 pounds the Nuvaring added... Does anyone have a solution? She eats small meals and exercises regularly. I wish our dr. would have revealed this side effect prior to going on the nuvaring.
