Hi, few months ago I have had an accident at skiing and I have broken my leg pretty badly and hurt my back as well. I was in a lot of pain and taking Ultram for it. I was experiencing some mild side effects, but the pain was under control so I didnt mind the nausea. Now the pain is not as strong and I would like to take some other non-addictive pain killer instead of Ultram. What are other non-addictive pain killers besides Ultram?

Hi, I dont know who told you that Ultram is a non-addictive pain killer, but this simply isnt true. The active ingredient in Ultram is tramadol, an opioid analgesic drug. This means that it works the same way the morphine works, but is less potent. Tramadol activates the same receptors as morphine therefore producing the same effect. But, in cases of severe pain the use of these drugs is inevitable. Now, since you are feeling better you should definitely talk to your doctor about taking you off Ultram. Under no circumstances should you try to change your therapy on your own. Because you have used Ultram for a period of time you should go off it gradually to avoid withdrawal symptoms. You will need your doctors assistance to do this as safely as possible. After you stop taking Ultram I am sure your doctor will prescribe you with a milder pain killer. Some of the optional drugs are Metamizol, Ibuprofen, Paracetamol and even Aspirin.

Things like paracetamol, ibuprofen, and aspirin are great for the temporary relief of short-term pain that isn't too severe, but when you are dealing with pain over a longer period of time and the pain is more severe, you will definitely want to discuss the best pain killers for you with your doctor.

In your case, if you're worried about addiction, definitely choose a pain killer that is not opium based. Since you broke bones, you also want to avoid pain killers that do not slow wound healing. Naproxen, perhaps? In any case, talk to your doctor before deciding because that will give you the best outcome.

I was looking for a non-addictive medication for my back, and read the posting about Ultram. I was on Ultram for a period of two and a-half years because of back pain. I decided after two and a half years that I wanted off of it. Instead of going to the doctor and getting help to stop taking it, I just simply stopped, cold turkey. Believe me, Ultram is addictive. I had mild withdrawal symptoms, but being a very strong individual, I stuck it out, and after a month, I was Ultram free.
Now, 5 years after leaving off the Ultram, I am looking for something that really is non-addictive to take. I have not taken anything for the past five years, and I am getting to a point where I need to find something. I am 75 years old, and have suffered with back problems most of my life.

I'm sorry to say the only pain med that is non addictive is Tylenol. Not enough for someone that is in chronic pain. All the others are addictive. They are working on a non addictive but it will be a couple of years before it is on the market.

You are mistaken. There are a variety of NSAIDS, including Advil and Motrin (ibuprofen), Naproxin sodium, acetamenophen (Tylenol). Paracetamol is the same thing as Tylenol, and metamizol has too many severe side effects to be realistically considered. There has been some successs using Neurontin off-label for pain. While it is a prescription drug, it is non-narcotic.

In addition to these, there are a number of non-drug interventions, including meditation, acupuncture, and and similar techniques.

If you will go to the website of your closest pain control center (at a medical school or university) you should be able to get information and referrals to a pain specialist.

I took Tramodol for pain related to my Hiradenits Suppurativa.  Believe me even after 3 days off of it cold turkey, it is addictive, and vicious.  My sleeping pattern is close to none.  I've layed in bed, and even had bad jerking spells.  I would rather have the pain than be on the monster that is Tramodol.  I came to this sote looking for a prescription non-addictive pain killer to talk to my doctor about in case I need it; not on a steady basis

Kratom! Its a tree that grows in South East Asia, its natural, organic and it works better than hydrocodone. You can get it online for pretty cheap too. Just do some research on it and find out what its all about.

It works for energy, stamina, mood lift, pain, anxiety, sun protection.....

It's also great for opiate withdrawal. Amazing actually...Enjoy!
