Hello, folks. My son takes some antihistamines and I know that he gets sleepy when taking them. However, I have recently heard that there are some non-sedating antihistamines. Is this true? If it is, I would really like to know what some of them are. I would appreciate all your replies.

Hello. Older antihistamines blocked both peripheral and brain’s H1 histamine receptors. That is why people taking them became sleepy. Those are sedating antihistamines. Such medications are promethazine (Phenergan), hydroxyzine and alimemazine. Newer generations block only peripheral H1 receptors. They cannot pass through the blood-brain barrier. That is why they are not sedating. Those are cetirizine and loratadine. However, they are not so effective in suppressing itching. For more information, you should consult your doctor.
