I heard of Speed Skating. I am not sure what it is but would like to know something more about it. Some people say that it is an Olympic sport now. People are skating and trying to be as fast as they can on short distances. Can you tell me something more about it?

It is true that Speed skating is an Olympic sport. Competitors are racing against time while crossing distance. Skaters manage to achieve maximum speed of some 60 km/h during short distances. Skaters race on a two-lane oval similar in dimension to an outdoor athletics track. In Bislett stadium in Oslo an athletics track covered with ice functioned as a speed skating track. A standard track is either 333⅓ or 400 m long. The standard used for all major competitions is 400 m. For training and smaller competitions tracks of non-standard lengths, such 200 or 250 m, are also being used. On standard tracks, each lane is 3–4 m wide and the curves have a radius of 25–26 m in the inner lane.
