Hello! My father suffers from emphysema. He started to feel shortness of breath long time ago. Since he was a smoker and wasn’t involved in any sport activity he didn’t paid much attention to the symptoms. But as the time passed the symptoms became more severe. When he started struggling to exhale he went to see his doctor. What complications could severe emphysema induce?

There is no cure, but emphysema can be effectively treated and its progression can be slowed down Emphysema causes an abnormal expansion of the chest wall which decreases the efficiency of breathing and destroys the lungs. Destroyed lung tissue is the most severe complication of emphysema. To people with advanced emphysema the surgical option is the only option.
