Hello! My father has emphysema and his condition was really serious a month ago. He used to smoke more then twenty cigarettes every day. He had shortness of breath and coughed a lot. When he ended in a hospital he finally admitted that he was ill. He stopped smoking and his doctor prescribed albuterol. At first his symptoms decreased but I think his condition is worsening. Could oxygen provide some relief with severe emphysema?

Hello! Well, there is no cure form emphysema and you should know this. This is a progressive disease but with proper treatment the progression can be slowed down. It is very important to be in constant contact with your father’s doctor who will prescribe treatments in a step-wise approach, depending on the severity of your father’s condition. Oxygen can provide some relief with emphysema. If your father had shortness of breath and went to a hospital’s emergency department he was most probably given oxygen. It is sometimes necessary to give oxygen by placing a tube in windpipe to allow a machine to assist the breathing. In some cases, it may be necessary for a patient to receive oxygen at home as well through home-based oxygen tanks.
