Hello, I am 13 years old (one month away from 14) and I still haven't had my period. Although, I have been having a thick, white mucus in my under wear for about 2 years!! At first I was confused and ignored it. The flow was uncommon and occurred about once a month. Now it is there every day (usually hourly) and drips. I am scared and confused, is this a sign of infection or a sign of an upcoming period. I am scared to tell my mother although I think she already knows from seeing my underwear, although I try to do my own wash. She has told me that she was a late bloomer so how will that affect me? I feel left out my not yet having my period. What is this mucus and how can having it help me know when I will FIRST get my period. I am a virgin at heart and have no intention of sex. I do not want to have a doctor concerned though I would love to know the answers to my questions. :|

The discharge is normal. It's a problem if it's clumpy and smells bad. You should be able to talk to your mom about it as all girls go through this.
And many girls are also late bloomers. You may also notice when you do get your period it might be irregular. It's all part of puberty.

When I was your age, I worried about the same things. I never talked to my mom either, but mostly because I could tell she didn't want to talk about it. I guess it's taboo in my family to talk periods. Don't worry, the discharge is normal. It's actually a good sign as long as it isn't clumpy and sour smelling, like ZekeZ said. It means that your body is making the proper changes of puberty. I wouldn't worry about not getting your period until you're about 17 or 18, but if you get irritated at the absence of your period after about 15 or 16, go ahead and talk to a doctor about it. They are there to help. As for knowing when your first period will be, there's not really any way to know for sure, but often times heartburn, severe gas, and other such lovely signs will pop up for a few months in a row to try to warn you. Don't be in any hurry. Periods are a nusuance and usually painful for most women.

Don't worry, your not the only one. I'm now 14, and the same thing has been happening to me for the last 2 years. I use tampons and stuff to try to stop the flow, if that helps you at all. We both just need some answers.
