Hello, I was wondering why do I need to increase my Metformin? I believe I have control of my blood sugar levels at this time. I've been taking 500mg two times a day for about 3 months. My doctor wants me to increase my Metformin to take 500mg four times a day. I don't understand what this will do for me. I really stick to my diet and it is a good diet. I'm worried about my levels of vitamin B12 and B6 as I believe my diet makes me deficient in these vitamins and doubling my Metformin dose makes it even worse. Can anyone help? Thanks.

So you believe your blood sugar levels are under control and you've been taking Metformin for 3 months and now you doctor wants to increase the dosage. Actually, this is common due to some side effects some experience when they first start Metformim. Metformin can cause stomach upset, nausea and possibly vomiting (rare) so to be on the safe side an initial low dose it given. The doctor starts you off with 500mg taken 2 times a day. It is important that you take Metformin with food or immediately after you eat. If you have no complications, you doctor will increase your dose. This may bring your blood sugar levels even better. Generally, the doctor will go to 500mgs 3 times a day or sometimes 4 depending on you blood glucose levels. The whole idea is to allow time for you to adjust to the medication. When I first started Metformin my doctor put me on 500mg two times a day and then put me on 500mg four times a day. I found that my blood sugar levels came down even further and I was feeling really good. I was able to change my diet a little bit to bring in more healthy carbs and that boosted my B12 and B6. However, I took a multivitamin from the beginning so I really didn't have a problem with vitamins. If you can try to take a good quality multi to keep your metabolism working properly.
