A family member was just told she suffers from Acute schizophrenic disorder. For now, she is spending some time in a mental health clinic until she gets better, after which she will probably move on to some day therapy options. My question is how long we should expect this episode to last?

Those are normally over in a couple of weeks, especially if the person is receiving proper treatment, and sometimes mental health professionals are able to stabilise a patient in a matter of days. Even in those cases it is often desirable for the patient to remain under observation, because such cases can quickly deteriorate again.
