My daughter is 20 years old and she was born autistic. She lived her entire life in her own world, although there have been some indications she is aware of the real world around her. But lately she has begun to put a lot of things in her mouth and starts eating those. Doctor said that it is most likely Pica disorder. What kind of condition is that and how is it manifested?

Pica is disorder that usually affects people that are autistic or mentally retarded. The main symptom would be trying to eat some objects and things. This could be just a phase that will be over soon, but it can also cause some minor damage. Anyway, this disorder can be treated and with a proper treatment the symptoms can be eliminated.

Hi there,
The thing is that your daughter is old but she has a condition where age really is not a consideration of her mental state. Now Pica is a disorder where patient tends to consume and crave for nonfood items. These items can be dirt, clay, plaster, chalk, hair, feces, sand, soap, toothpaste and many more. The fact is that some items are not dangerous but others are and there for Pica is very problematic syndrome. Doctors say that this can lead to lead poisoning and iron deficiency anemia. As you can see this is something that you need to consult your doctor and see what can be done to stop her from doing this.

All the best,
Danella
