Hi just came acros this because i was searchign the effects of adderall on blood sugars or type one diabetes.  I was diagnosed with type one diabetes when I was in sixth grade (I am now a senior in college) and then began taking thryoid medication for hashimotos when I was a junior in high schoool.  I was just diagnosed with ADHD and will start taking adderall today which I am thrilled about becuase my life has spiraled out of control- I was very high achieving in high school and won multiple academic and athletic awards and then went to william and mary and since have battled depression, anxiety and eating disorders which is now believed to be part of the ADHD.  So in my case, it is obvious that taking adderall did not cause type one diabetes or the thyroid disease since it happened before i started the medicaton, but from reading this it is very interesting to me that there must be a link.  I am hoping the adderall will help me with my diabetes as I used to have such strict control (A1cs in the 6.0 range) and since I got to college they have been in the 9-10 range.  Someone told me I may need to take more adderall because of the diabetes to get it to work effectively? does anyone have any idea or experience with that?

I study nano microbiology. I also was forced to take ADHD medication despite my unwillingness as a child to put anything besides whole foods; fruits and vegetables in my mouth, and my parents regret ever listening to the quack teachers and doctors. I now have auto-immune disorder with no history of it and the majority of my family lives to extreme age. I no longer trust anyone else with my diagnostics and would rather take my own cells and look at it under a microscope. Decent dark field microscopes do not cost that much anymore and we desperately need more real research done and less blind mass prescriptions to the public by so called doctors listening to 10 minute converstaion and looking at a questionnaire then handing out pills they were told to sell.

Quoted from a previous post; "To me it is a crime that doctors, drug companies and our government would support and encourage putting children on these drugs! Sure people benefit from amphetamine use, but so does the general population as evidenced by the wide usage among college students. Since I came out of the closet on my ADD and Adderall use, I have suggested to several parents including wives of MD's and even a pharmacologist who have asked about Adderall that before they put their kid on it they should try it for a few days, knowing that it has the same physical effect (although less due to weight and dosage) that it would have on their twelve year old "

Are people so ignorant that they do not see big pharma's game theory at play? Create a problem, and the solutions, and you MAKE MONEY. Stimulants CAUSE the Vitamin D receptor to malfunction which EFFECT the bodies immune system; their solution is anti-histamines and steroids for the rest of your life. All about the $$$,$$$,$$$,$$$,$$$'s I had to show this in symbols to make extra emphasis on the insane amount of money that is being made. If your doctor truly cared about you they would be personally looking at your blood under a dark field or better microscope and giving you a real diagnosis. It is difficult to find someone like that unless you know what you are looking for. Ask your laboratory what kind of hardware they use and what process they use to diagnose you. BE INFORMED AND BE AWARE. There are countless studies proving this though you generally will not see them endorsed by the big pharma owned FDA and WHO. You have been fooled by a salesman and the question is; what is everyone going to do about it? Seems like everyone is just letting these criminals get away with their social engineering and eugenics on us all.

Normally I could care less about the sheeple but this is effecting ignorant children who do not yet have the ability to think for themselves and when they do think for themselves it doesn't matter because their ignorant parents who sign off on their children's rights because they listened to a common man or woman in a white coat or their teachers telling them so and so pill will help.

Nature has the solutions; not mankind.

I was not forced to take adderall the decision was left up to me by the specialiest (rheumatologiest) and psychiatrist i am seeing who are working in conjuction with one another to help me get better (I have type one diabetes, hypothyroidism (hashimotos), and a circulation disorder- all diagnosed BEFORE I started adderall). I went in to him a month ago thinking I needed anti depressants because I had gotten even worse and was having debilitating fatigue. They performed an EKG on my brain to see which medications I would respond best to and sent me the results BEFORE I talked it over with the psychiatrist at my next appointment. Since I started taking the adderall and I am on a very low dose ( 5mg only once a day- partly because I am also on cytomel and told my doctor that I had a high sensitivity to medications) I have had more energy, felt better, more confident, and had a clearer head (less brain fog- hypothyroid patients will know what I am talking about here) so thank you for your concern and I do realize that many doctors prescribe medications in order to benefit from the drug distributors but IN MY CASE THIS WAS NOT HOW IT HAS BEEN. thank you for the response and I do think it is important to be wary of that but I also do believe that stimulants can vastly improve some people's quality of life.

Thank you to the pre Med student ..lots of info.
To anonymous nano student.. i beg to differ on your comment that stimulants are "The" cause of vitamin D receptors malfunction.
I am 37yr female and diagnosed ADHD 1yr ago ONLY after badgering my family Dr to text for vitamin deficiency, thyroid function, diabetes when he told me I was bipolar and had depression. I Did do My research (as much as I could between sleeping 16hrs a day raising 4 kiddos and taking care of parent after their second stoke) Thyroid levels came back "in normal range " on low end of designated spectrum (was told each lab used their own), blood sugars were normal, and liver enzymes were "in normal range" again low end of spectrum, bad cholesterol was good range and "good cholesterol was high ...
BUT vitamin D was 19 with using range of 35-50..(note this was taken in the month of June and when I wasn't sleeping I was outside in southern sun) I have never used drugs social drinker and grew up witj southern cooking so no malnutrition (5'2" 130lbs until after birth of 2nd child at 27 then/still struggled to be under 160lbs)
Have been on Adderall 20mg instant release am and 20mg same at noon. Lost a few pounds in beginning ..but no more..(would have been nice to have that side effect! Lol)
After..ONLY..after seeing how the quality of my daily life Benefited from being medicated did I then have my two older children evaluated. My son (12) vitamin D was 16! HE told me he wanted to be on medicine because he saw the difference it made in me! He is on 20mg XR adderall. When his father wanted to fight the medication choice ..My Son fought for his right to feel normal.
Every person reactions to meds are not the same..and there is a lot of misdiagnosis going around ..
Because family Dr still didn't believe I was ADHD(even after He had me go to a psychologist and 2 psychiatrist ) he still put me on three diiferemt antidepressant in addition to adderall .(he said one of them had to work ).I had two hypomanic episodes before I again was able to bring information I had found on if a person does Not suffer from depression how taking antidepressants can actually cause manic episodes!
Have been on just adderall and enjoying life!
I agree that Some adults put kids on meds because they don't want to parent ..BUT until you have a child who suffers from ADHD when you have it to and know what life is like trapped on our minds chaos ..
Please educate don't judge

Adderall structure bears a strong resemblance to the amino acid precursors for dopamine, epinephrine, norepinephrine, and thyroxine. If there is a predisposition for a condition that requires Adderall, it will likely be present for any other related condition, such as hypothyroidism. The psoriasis and blood sugar disorders share a probable common link of zinc picolinate and vitamin B6 deficiencies or insufficiencies. Zinc metabolism disorders can be present in thyroid disorders. Zinc is also a neurotransmitter and required for proper immune system functioning. What is apparent is that the underlying interrelationships between all the conditions are what should be investigated by a competent biochemist (who is not necessarily your primary care physician). The high histamine due to inflammation can be related to the loss of a properly functioning immune system.
There are other possibilities of course, but hopefully this will give people a place to begin their investigations.

I started taking adderall in 09 and immediately became sick, progressively, physically and eventually mentally felt like I was dying. After twelve drs, cleveland and mayo clinic, was diagnosed with hashimotos thyroiditis. I stopped the adderall until recently, now have signs and symptoms of RA, fibromalagia, diabetes, hair is falling out again after just a few months....although my add is frustrating, the medication is not worth the chronic life long sickness it causes in people...I know its hard dealing with ADD BUT CONSIDER dealing with constant fatigue, pain, endless other problems in addition to which is where I'm at. I try to start as positive as possible, but if I had to do it again I would not take it...knowing what I do now.

Hashimotos and thyroid diseases cause symptoms that are mistaken for depression, ADHD and other issues. Having one autoimmune disease leaves you more prone to others. You very likely had it before starting adderall.. I developed Hashis in 1988. Ignorant doctors along the way just dealt with the TSH level and ignored the rest. I developed GERD, venious Isufficency, Plantar Facitis, extreme weight gain.....laundry list of subseqent issues. Ive only been on Adderall 1 1/2 years and doing better than past decade - obviously Addy couldnt have caused my other health problems - the Hashis did. Addy has been greatly helping the autoimmune symptoms.

I am Sorry to all those who have suffered. However ADD, ADHD....Adults or kids...It is not a problem!!  High energy is a personality trait that people need to grasp and live with.  It has its advantages and disadvantages.  Doctors label it a disorder to make you feel like you have a disease, but seriously for you older people if you lived 30+ years and just now got diagnosed with ADD why on earth would start to take METHAMPHETIMINE.  I have arthritis and spondylitis and I am on Enbrel. I had the so called "adult ADD" adderall prescription and all it did was give me high energy and sleepless nights(grind my teeth, dehydrated).  It made my pain worse and rashes were all over. I don't blame the medication I blame myself for not realizing my own bodys natural path.  I am a high energy person who finds ways to put hat energy to use. (work, housework, sports).  Sitting at home in chair with a shaky leg is not a disease LOL.  Sorry I just feel like my problems should be shared. For those who have been on it for longs periods of time, cold turkey is the worst thing to do! consult you Dr. before quitting. Lower doses...etc.

Maybe some (like me) are taking it for other prescribed reasons. No ADHD or anything close to it.

Hi, I am a type1 and I am on adderall. When I was in college I didn't yet have diabetes and I wasn't yet diagnosed with ADD either. I, like you battled depression, anxiety and an eating disorder. It was in therapy, that I discovered I had ADD. I didn't go on medication though because at that time, it was not easy to get. There was a whole process that seemed overwhelming to me. I have been on it for several years now. It does help me a lot. I was only dignosed with diabetes 2 years ago. The medication does bring your sugar up a bit but at the same time I feel it's easier to control my appetite so I think it helps with the blood sugar in that way. Good luck!!:)

So true...I have to take 50-60 mg adderall xr each day due to narcolepsy. Honestly I hate the drug and my newfound skin condition/lymph node swelly/possible lupus dx (all since starting adderrall in Oct 2011) but hey...all of that is better than falling asleep at any time all of the time...my MSLT showed my average sleep latency was .36 minutes...on 3 of my 5 naps I hit within 1 minute. I have heard that narcolepsy could be an autoimmune disease but my Neurologist hasnt done anything. I guess I will suck up the c**p from Addy until they can fix me :( Any info on narcolepsy / cataplexy as an autoimmune issue please let me know! Thanks for all of the info on this blog...if there are any med profs that can explain pos ANA and Pos RNP it would be awesome...the Rheumatologists that my PCM reffered me to was TERRIBLE. I am off to dream now...

St. John's Wort can affect serotonin levels much like SSRI medications. Any medication that affects serotonin or acts in an antidepressant way can cause your Adderall to be much less effective. Just FYI since you mentioned that you are not having as much positive effect from your Adderall.

Hi everyone:

I have been diagnosed with psoraisis since I was 17 years old.  As I got older, I am 61 years old now, the episodes became less and less.  However, I also have sleep apnea and have been diagnosed with ADD.  My doctor prescribed adderall.  I worked so well you would not believe it. I was able to go to work without struggling to get up in the morning (yes I used CPAP, but it is cumbersome, trying to get another device).  Needless to say my face is now as red as a tomato and extremely dry and itchy.  My doctor told me to get off the meds.  What do I do now?  I am back to the same old struggle of getting out of the bed in the morning and being tired the whole day.  Does anyone, anywhere, have some suggestions?  I would be so appreciative.

thanks

Maureen S.

When I read this post I felt as if I was reading my med history in random form. In October 2010 some random NP diagnosed me with adult ADHD. I stayed on the 30 mg adderal XR for many months then my skin started freaking out. Then the random sleep spells started. I am in the Air Force and lost muscle functions at work one day. My supervision sent me to the ER which referred me to some other guy for blood work and a brain scan. Apparently my blood work cameback as pos ANA & RNP. From there I was sent to a rheumy that diagnosed me with systemic lupus on my second visit. He gave me plaque nil but I wanted a second opinion. The next rheumy said I didn't have Lupus. I requested a third opinion as things progressed. This doc said no lupus. I got a case manager at the base clinic after my PA wouldn't help. I finally got a sleep study/MSLT. The results were MSLT .36 minutes. 2 REM onsets at nap...one of them was 0 minutes. I had a cataplectic moment during the study. My diagnosis remains with sleep apnea, limb movement disorder and narcolepsy with cataplexy. WTH I am so sick of the Addy c**p and the machine and the celesta and neurontin meds. I am off the plaque nil now that they decided my lupunfo. My neurollogist ignores me...s is narcolepsy. What a mess.! Have you received any other autoimmune narcolepsy i
