Read couple of posts on how some of the treatments worked.

At the age of 22, I had my first patch on my moustache and on left side above ears. I tried shampoo's and natural medication and didn't seem to go.

Just when I completely stopped all medications and stopped caring about it, my moustache regrew and all patches were gone. It took nearly 6-9 months.

At 31 had couple of patches on head (which went away in 3 months), but ones on my eyebrow seems to be taking longer.

So if any medicine is working, I would say it is just a chance and best way is to not worry or cover the spots and forget it. I believe stress plays a big role as a trigger

Hi,
I thought I too would share a success story as most of the stories I have read online are not very uplifting.
When I was 8 years old, my mother got very sick, and was practically on her death bed. I took the situation extremely hard, and have been told by people around me at the time that my levels of stress during that period were significantly higher than normal. It wasn't too long after that my hair began falling out in huge patches. I already had thin, white hair. So it began very noticeable. They told me it was Alopecia Areata disorder. However a short time later every single hair on my body fell out also. I had not one single hair on my head, face, or body. For the next few years my mother(whom at this point had gotten better) tried everything for me. She would drive me to numerous doctors who tried all sorts of treatments. But what I remember the most was the foods she got me to eat, it was awhile ago so I can't remember exactly what that was, I remember the distinct taste of Goji berry juice shots and big supplements though. My hair grew back over those years, but very thin, so thin that my mum had to shave it so that my wig would stay on my head. She hated doing that. But by the time I was 12, the trips to doctors or the search for a cure was nearly completely irrelevant. my hair was thick enough to no longer need my wig.
I am now 19. I have a full head of hair(still thin as its genetic unfortunately) eyebrows, eyelashes and body hair. My hair grows normally and although very very rarely I get a small bald spot, it's unoticable.
I had Alopecia Universalis for nearly 4 years, and when I tell people today they can't believe it because it isn't noticeable in the slightest. If anything, they are jealous of how thin my body hair is.
Although it may seem like there isn't success stories, there definitely is!! :)

Hi! I'm glad I found this discussion because it seems there are only scary stories out there on the internet. About four years ago I found my first AA spot. It was about the size of a quarter on the back of my head and easy to cover. Even so, I was very upset because I had never even heard of AA and I didn't know what to expect. I went to the dermatologist and had corticosteriods shots injected in the spot. I went back about every 5 weeks to have this treatment done over the next 6 months. The doctor advised me that he feels there is a connection between stress/anxiety and AA.
I also had acupuncture twice a month to treat the AA and help reduce stress/anxiety. My acupuncturist also talked to me about diet and experimenting with cutting out inflammatory foods from my diet such as gluten, which I did. The spot started to grow back completely within 6 months and grew fast! I have very long hair and somehow the hair that from the spot has already caught up with the rest of my long hair. I had one other spot about the some size within a year of the first one and I followed the some treatment and it too grew back. Now four years later I have one more spot about the size of a nickel right now. I have been under a lot of stress lately and so I'm just doing a lot of self-care stuff and trying not to worry about it. I've made an appointment with the dermatologist for this week and having acupuncture tomorrow. My main point is that my experience is has been minor, temporary, manageable, and that my hair did grow back and quickly,

My son was diagnosed of Alopecia areata (totalis) when he was 16 years old. He lost all his hairs on his body (head, eyebrow, etc.) in the span of 3 weeks. It was devastating to him considering this is the age that a teenager is building his identity. He was thinking to home school but his high school guidance counselor recommended not to because he might not finish high school. He was allowed to wear a hat at all times. It was his decision as well to finish high school because he does not want to be left behind. He made it to graduation but did not attend the commencement exercise.
For almost four years, he's been wearing hat all the times, many trials and errors in our part as parents and him as well.
He studied himself and the combination of proper diet and mostly exercise everyday helped him to bring all his hairs back. He takes everyday protein shakes, fish oil, one day Men's multivitamin pill, shampoo only 2 o 3 times a week and use natural shampoo.
His discipline and acceptance in everything bring back his hairs.
My son is a living example that alopecia totalis can be overcome. All his hairs came back last March 2016. He's turning 21 in 3 days, and for a long time he will go to the beach to swim. He will be in his senior year in college this fall.

hello, for those of you who have been diagnosed with alopecia areata, i was and still am to. i am 14 years old and attending public school and i am a freshmen at pickens high. i once had this when i was 10 but the spots were so small that no one could tell and i went to my doctor and he gave us this moose that helped the hair grow back and no one ever knew. but his year or for the past 2 years it's been different. We first noticed it when i was on vacation. i went to wilderness in the smokies and one of my oldest brothers wives relatives pointed out that i had a bald spot. i didn't make it that much of an issue and just went on and didn't really think anything about it, then i went to my cousins house and she saw the enormous big bald spot that i had underneath. we tried to catch it time but by then it had already been too late. i got assigned to this doctor and he put me on steroid injections once a month and also photo light therapy. i still do that plus 6 other medication and treatments. i am not giving up in school, because overall i am always going to be a fighter and i always have to keep going no matter what. some things that have worked for me is massaging re onion juice on my head for 5 min and 3 times a week. within the month my hair had grown 4 inches. although there is no "cause" so my doctors have told me there is a way to keep it from coming back. watch what you eat and try smoothies with vegetables. anyway, this is my alopecia areata story

Hi there. I am just wondering how you are going with AA now? I am a 30 year old female who has just been diagnosed. I have only one patch at this stage and it was only found 2 days ago. I know everyone is different but I just wanted to know how yours is going now. Hoping for a positive ending to AA

Have you tried contacting a holistic nutritionist? very helpful. For myself I was taking supplements and after contacting someone I found out I wasn't taking the right ones. To much sugar can cause yeast build up in the body...maybe something to look into?
