I had acdf 4thru7 and 4 years post surgery still have choking sensation. I had an infection 2 weeks post op, with same lump you are describing which eventually opened up loaded with infection., readmited for 5 days on iv antibiotics, and they left incision wide open for 3 and a half months. I STILL have unbearable choking feeling. Now they say fusion never took 4 years ago, and both discs above plate are now shot too. Good luck, I will never do surgery again after what happened first time.

Hi Mary, I went through all of this in Nov 2006. I cried and cried with this nightmare. I couldn't even go up a flight of stairs without choking. I even developed anxiety attacks behind it all. Finally after three months of suffering I marched into the doctor's office and demanded he remove the titanium plate. He gave me some c**p about me being super sensitive, but I stood my ground. I had talked to many people, who had this same procedure and suffered the same pain. I even met a woman who was two years post op and still had that choking feeling. Super sensitive was not believable to me. I wanted this plate out. He tried to tell me the plate was very thin, but I refused. I think at this point I was not going to suffer another minute of this. Well, on February he took out the plate. Immediately I felt the difference, the choking stopped. To this date, I will NEVER let them near my neck again. Mary, you have choices, don't let them fool you. In the three months I waited my bones did fused together and I didn't need the plate after all. I guess that was a plus for me, but I didn't care what he said I knew this was not acceptable to me. So, please google it yourself so you can see you can remove the plate and be normal again

I'm with you Arrow, I have had mine for twelve years. It has taken me a long time to find a doctor to remove mine, At the present I'm suffering with an inflamed voice box, put a camera and said it was inflamed by my plate, I also have an allergy to the metal. Don't buy what they tell you it don't go away as a matter of fact mine has gotten worse with ear infections etc. I went to a new doctor and he is going to remove it, my neck swells and feels like someone is choking me, and sometimes I feel like I can't breath. I called the company that makes my plate and they got mad because they said that it was suppose to have been removed as soon as the bone fuses. If you get a splinter in your hand it gets inflamed because it is a foreign object, so the same thing will happen with a metal plate. I hope things works out for you.

Everyone is dfferent don't let my story discourage you. I am miles from where I was when I first got out of the hospital. They damaged my nerve somewhere during the process and I lost feeling in the leftside of my tongue, which now sticks out crooked and I lost the majority of my high pitch notes because my vocal cords were damaged as well. It was a slow healing process but it did improve with time. DId you have the numbness etc... in your hand etc before the surgery? In my opinion there is swelling for awhile so the results aren't immediately apparent. I am 46 now and this was my 4th with titanium screws, started when I was 21. The best way I can describe how I felt after was a function such as swallowing and breathing I never gave much thought to, I just did it. Now I am aware of every breath, every swallow. Anything associated with the whole innerchange where my breathing and swallowing come together in my esophagus I am aware of. I always feel as if I have a lump in my throat.

I had the surgery many years ago and the swallowing/choking issues has never really gotten better --you just have to eat slowly and hope not to choke on anything you eat.  Yes, I have the legs issues ever since I had the surgery and it is on the same side where the surgery was performed. I have a flared up of the pains now and I a dealing with a case of pain/hurts everywhere right now - so I hope you can get some relieve because the doctor - think that we are just making up this hurting but we know it is REAL.

After talking alot does your throat hurt and your voice gets raspy? I was in voice therapy for over a year after they damaged my cords and nerves. They said it was in all in my mind and would go away that it is stress induced....

i had the fusion c6 c7 2years and 4months ago.  my issues with breathing started the day i got out of surgery.  i noticed the night i went to lay down.  i couldnt breathe.  i was snoring with my eyes open. the nurse said it was normal because the tube goes down and the nerves that are pushed over during the surgery takes 5 or 6 months to recover.  i am alway spitting up and never have a clear throat.  almost like im drowning all the time.  2 years after i went to er finally and they said i had acute bronchitis.  but i think it is caused by inflammation where the plate is.  it is very frustrating im only 39. male.
