Hi, I am 57 years old, and 6 weeks after I was born my mom was hospitalized for Encephalitis. She was 18 years old, now 76. She is bordering paranoid, thinks we're all against her, accusing her of unthinkable things, untrusting and has pretty much closed us all off. (2 younger siblings). My dad is in the hospital right now, and none of us can go for fear of an outbreak. She was told she'd be a vegetable or die, but instead is our living miracle. But I've read in senior years, as the body starts deteriorating there could be residual side effects that come back from the Encephalitis...Is there anywhere I can look to learn more about this? She says nothing is wrong with her, that it's all us...we all have the problem...

How about a dry, persistent cough, with no explanation, or results from x-rays??
I had equine encephalitis when I was almost 3 yrs old, even became comatose for several days.. Had to learn to walk again in braces, and needed speech therapy...
I have trust issues (I assumed was from being adopted out), had a nasty temper until I was about 50, but oddly enough, I'm near photographic memory even now...
The one issue no-one can explain, is the cough I've always had, like a nervous cough disorder... Thanks..

I am 70 years old. I had encephalitis when I was 12. It wasn't too bad but after that I changed. Everyone assumed that it was because I was a teen. I suffered from memory loss, low energy, anxiety, depression. I attempted suicide, etc. Very similar to others. Lately I was diagnosed with a stroke and sent to a neurologist since CAT scan shoed considerable damage to frontal lobe, many leasons and atrophy ... Neurologist, after much more testing, decided this was likely caused by the encephalitis I had 58 years ago --- and that I did not have a stroke! So --- now I am looking into research on brain plasticity. Doctors can help a bit but they really don't know enough.

Hi Sophie, My daughter's name is Sophie and she was infected by a virus that lead to meningitis snd encephalitis this past fall. She also had seizures. She is now recovering, but has problems concentrating, mood swings and is not able to plan and problem solve. She also has behavioural issues. It really breaks my heart.
The doctors say we need to wait and see. I am worried that these will be long term.
I wish you all the best.

My husband had "chicken pox encephalitis" as a 1 month old. At one point, he screamed, went white, stiffened, then became flaccid for several days. My mother in law said she could not get him to nurse for 2 days. No health care available until age 2. For some reason a doctor did a "brain scan" (1962) and determined that there was brain damage consistent with viral encephalitis. Husband is now in his 50's. He has always had issues socially, has a strong family history of anxiety and depression (refuses to treat), and is prone to unreasonable outbursts. Much of what I see would be consistent with TBI. His intellect is fine (he is a physician). He has periodic migraines and a bit of a tremor (but so did his mother and a brother). He has had 2 other episodes of head trauma with loss of consciousness - all untreated and before age 18. His mother passed away at age 87 - had dementia (diagnosed Alzheimers, but really didn't follow typical path). Could his behavior be related to the encephalitis?

Hi my boyfriend had measles and encephalitis when he was 4 years old. He didn't lose his walking and talking abilities fortunately. I am his second spouse. His first wife died from congestive heart failure even though she didn't smoke, or do drugs, or any unhealthy behavior. She was overweight but took great length in eating organic, avoided prescription drugs but it got so bad her legs were large painful lesions. Congestive heart failure doesn't run in her family either. I am 49 and believe that I too have congestive heart failure and/or kidney issues. Does anyone who had encephalitis have a mate with congestive heart failure or kidney issues?

Hi there, I had viral encephalitis when I was 1 1/2 years old and had to be put into an induced coma for several days. I just turned 43. I have a long history of frequent and severe depression, suicide attempts, social anxiety, anger problems, violence, stress, reclusive-ness, poor balance among other things. I also find I am on the defensive all the time, am highly suspicious of people, (even ones I know). I am worried about what is to come and if so, what exactly is coming. I also can't remember much of my childhood at all.

Having read in many posts as well as yours that many of us suffer from migraine headaches I have to share what has worked wonders for me, my home health attendant as well as my nurse who does home visits weekly. The "miracle cure" (which the nurse told me about) is a "Daith" piercing, amazingly I haven't had a single migraine since getting mine done. I was getting migraines weekly that would last anywhere from three hours to four days making me bedridden in complete darkness and quiet and now complete bliss to be rid of the headaches that had been a constant for as long as I can remember. I won't lie, the piercing process hurt while happening but was over very quickly, it is deep enough in the outer ear so that side sleeping doesn't apply pressure so additional pain is not caused while healing.
