I have recently been told that I have Type 2 Diabetes. That was enough of a shock to me of course, but I am still learning about all the complications that can happen in diabetes. I do know that type 1 diabetes can cause Charcot's arthropathy. Can it also happen to type 2 diabetics?? If so, what can I do to make sure this never happens to me? Thanks.

Dear maisie286,

If you think about it, diabetes is a syndrome with no known cause and also charcot joints are also a syndrome with no known cause. Since diabetes is known to be an autoimmune disease and since arthritis and even neuropathy are, or can be, autoimmune in nature it is more likely that the autoimmune disease causes diabetes, the arthritis, and also the neuropathy.

Do you have rheumatoid arthritis, for instance. Any morning stiffness of the hands, even a little?

Drop a line.
