Hi there,
I am 2,5 weeks post operation on a surgery c6/c7
I still have a sore feeling in my shoulders and my neck is (also because of wearing a soft collar) not smoothly moving. Its getting some better after I have given myself a small massage in the neck and shoulders.
Is it allright to go to a fysiotherapist in the 3rd week after surgery?
Is there a standard time for recovery of this type of surgery?
greetings,
Martin

Hi mart, I can tell you that when you have back surgery that the recovery period can be long depending on what the surgery is. I think that you should probably hold off on going out because it could be a little bit complicated if you don't. Maybe I would say waiting a month before you put a little bit of extra strain on your body anyway. Can you keep me posted on how you're doing now? I know that you posted this awhile back so I want to know how you're doing. Thanks for posting!

I had C5-C6 done several years ago. My best advice to you is ask your surgeon first. Your surgeon may want to check your healing process first. I had PT 3 mos after my surgery but I have seen blogs that state some people have it sooner.
Like I said Please ask your doctor first. You want to make sure everything is healed well enough.
Best of luck

How long was your actual physical therapy period? I am wanting to know because I know someone who is undergoing this procedure soon and I'd like to be able to offer support. I also have to drive around and get her to appointments so I'd like to know what to expect because currently I'm a bit in the dark. It seems like you had some experience and I know I can ask around but I don't want to appear selfish. Any insight you have would be good!

I've actually had PT 3 times, beleive it or not, for the same issue.
The first one, 3 mos after ACDF, was 2-3 times a wk for 6 wks.
The second, 2 times a wk for 13 wks
The third, 2 times a wk for 6 wks.
Each appt was 45 min long
Abviously PT helped me little. I do not have full neck movement still!
I hope your friend has better luck than me!
Hope I've helped.

Healthnfitnessguy,
thanks for you reaction. I will try to recover slowly and not doing to much to soon. Walking and taking rest is what i will do the coming month. After 2.5 month I hope to be able to do someting more.
KariB: thanks for your reaction. No surgery is the same and no person is the same. What a big problem is for me doesn't have to be that for you and vice versa. If I had a chance to do it all over I would have tried other methods to recover longer. But thinking of the pain that I had I am glad that I had the surgery. (my pain is gone) The effects of the surgery, try to be optimistic and not look on this site to much because a lot of people still have problems. Out of every 10 people with complaints after surgery there are at least a 100 that are happy with thei new neck! And those people are not on this website.
greetings,
all the best to you,
till sooner but not to soon I hope!

Hi mart, I'm really glad to hear that you're happy with the surgery and not regretting it because that can be a very painful and difficult experience to go through so it sounds like you're staying positive! Keep us posted on how you're doing and thanks again for letting us know and keeping us updated on you.

Hi there healtnfitnessguy,
last week things are going some easier. Walking for 2 miles. Using my neck goes some better although the muscles are still quite stiff but i see some progress in that. I am now 7 weeks postop. It is going slowly but steady. I cannot lift weight more then 3 kg. Mainly the muscles in my neck react then but not my neck itself or the new cervical implant. Still lot of fatigue but that also is getting some lesser.
I want to work, but that is not possible yet. I am a photographer and have to carry camera and bag up to 8 to 10 kg if I go out working.
So I will be patient and work hard tol get back in my job. I am positive about my recovery. But in the beginning with little knowledge of this disease that was some different. I had a to optimistic view of my recovery because of the lack of information I got from the surgeon and his staff. Maybe better so, otherwise I would have doubted to have my discectomy and waited some langer for the surgery.
My thinking is: a healthproblem must be solved right away or asap. If I go to a doctor I trust the man to know what he is doing.
In my life I had good experiences with thinking in this way. How did your neckhernia develop? Is it arthrosis or a sportsinjury as you are in fitness. How old are you? Please let me know and stay positive. I will make a prayer for you also this evening to become healthy again.
It is often so that people who live healthy and love doing sports get all kind of injuries and people who never are sporting do not have health problems. I think that unfair. Greetings, Mart the Netherlands

Hi there, I'm glad to hear that you are doing well because it sounds like your recovery is doing really well. Do you play sports? Which ones do you play if you do? Or were you asking me if I had a neck hernia?

Hi Mart, how are things going? Are you able to lift things again? I know that HFG and I have probably been raining tons of questions on you but I know that I for one am very curious about how you're doing and would like to hear about how things are going! Thanks in advance.
