I have heard that small amounts of chloral hydrate can treat insomnia. I also heard that it is something like an old medicament, not used anymore. But I wonder why is that? I do not think that modern drugs are lot safer then the old ones. I think that the pharmacy industry is just looking for a way to earn as much money as they can, slightly changing the chemical structure of a drug, which retains its effect, and then sell under the new name. Why was chloral hydrate abandoned in the first place?

To the some point I agree with you. Unfortunately, everything is business today; this includes humans health too. I assume that you are familiar with the fact that many drugs today have serious side effects that almost question their positive effects. Pharmaceutical companies are very fast when they have to deny their guilt. As for chloral hydrate, today it is replaced with benzodiazepines. It caused dependency so I assume that is one reason they have banned it in U.S. Then again, so many meds cause exactly the same thing and they are freely distributed.
