I bled for 63 days last time I reacted to the cortisone. I had a spinal injection (herniated discs) and an injection in my ankle and within 10 days-I started bleeding on and off with flow heavy to light, normal to brown- My obgyn was about to do a heavy duty cleaning of my uterus with some boiling water to get it to stop and I was nervous about that so I put it off and on day 64 it stopped. That was 2 years ago, and here I am with it happening again after another cortisone injection 3 1/2 weeks ago. It has been 2 weeks bleeding with it kicking in about 10 days after the injection.
I have to have some ganglion cysts drained from my wrist on Tues. and they are following up with guess what? Another cortisone injection- Needless to say, it totally sucks and it makes me never want to get another injection as only 3 of the 15 injections I have had (all over for multiple issues over 14 years) have ever helped me with pain relief but I have only had this bleeding thing happen twice now. So I guess it is a weighing the benifits thing.
I am not going to have any more injections unless it is a must.

I have had about 6 cortisone shots over the past 3 years. EVERY time I start my period shortly after that and it starts out brown and then light to medium constant flow. This time it has lasted 18 days and counting. Previous times 40 and 62 days. Those times I thought maybe I had a misscarriage and they did an endomitriel biopsy (which I got a major bacterial infection). I made the connection with the cortisone shots but my Gyno said no. My Physical Med Dr. said that it is quite possible because cortisone is similar to the female hormone, he said none of his patients have complained of this (probably because they haven't made the connection). I used provera/amen/cycrin 10 mg (medroxyprogesterone acetate tab) 1 tab 2x a day for 10 days then take a break then 1 tab a day day 16 to 25. This didn't do much to stop it. try b6

I had a cortisone shot mid August 08 to treat extremely bad eczema on my hand. I also used a skin cream sporadically thereafter which I did not realize also contained cortisone. Since then I've had five day periods of light menstual bleeding followed by eight to ten days without bleeding, then the five days of bleeding begins again. I discontinued the hand cream a month ago- but I'm still on this crazy fifteen day cycle (five days bleeding, ten days not), and it's mid October! On the day of the injection, the nurse practitioner warned me I would most likely experience either one extra "period", or miss one, as it was a common side effect of cortisone use in women. Even with this warning, I didn't expect the effects to linger so long. But I have to say, the o.b.s written about here renew my amazement at the ignorance combined with arrogance in doctors in general. They had never heard of a connection? Are they living in a bubble? Shouldn't you be obliged to keep up with current studies and research to keep your license? Failing that, they might try to display some small bit of scientific reasoning to processing the information patients give them re: 1)i've had a new substance introduced to my body, and 2) I have a new symptom which may be related and 3) Not previously hearing of connection doesn't make it unlikely. It just makes it currently unproven. Or the Dr. currently ignorant.

40 days of bleeding and still counting after 2 epidural steroid injections aprox. 2 weeks apart. Just had GYN visit with pelvic exam and endometrial biobsy (not so nice). The GYN said he has seen connection to the steroid/period. He has scheduled more tests next week and I'm wondering if I should wait a bit longer for this to go away. Ugh.

No answer as to how to get it to stop.

So I've been reading everyone else's posts because I myself have been having issues with my period. So far it has been going for a week and a half with no end in sight, not to mention this is my second period this month. It's extremely frustrating. The only thing my doctor said before administering the shot was "this may make your period go a little haywire." This is way more than a "little" haywire if you ask me! As I've been doing research on the internet today, I realize that there are far more side effects other than this as well. I am very angry with my doctor that she wasn't specific about the side effects. What makes it worse is that cortisone didn't even work for it's intended purpose. Now I'm stuck with a never-ending period. Thanks doc.

I had 2 cortisone injections in my lower back 3 weeks ago, and the next week i got my period 10 DAYS EARLY! A "normal" cycle is 28 days, whereas mine is usually 32-34 and I always regular. I got my period on day 25. I've also had nausea, stomach upset, fatigue and anxiety. I'd rather put up with the back pain than go thru this again!! I do feel like the shot is starting to wear off, thank god.

Just a follow up to my earlier post.
I mentioned I visited my GYN doc after a very long course of bleeding after 2 epidural steroid injections for disc herniation. He did mention the connection between the two, but also ordered ultrasound just to rule out other causes.

He found an endometrial polyp that may also be the cause of my prolonged bleeding. I've never been irregular. So I've scheduled an outpatient procedure to have it removed.

All the hopes of getting epi shots and avoiding back surgery have led me to a D&C of a polyp in my uterus!

BTW...my bleeding has gone sort of haywire also...spotting, stopping and starting??? So, was it the steroid? I don't know. But I am extremely happy my pain has gone away! I'll live with the side effects instead of dealing with that kind of pain again. Keeping up with my PT tho.

I had two steroid injections in my right shoulder (23rd Oct) a week before my period's usual start (as per my regular cycle for last 2 years since my 2nd child) - my period arrived 2 weeks later (6th Nov), but boy did I feel pre-menstrual and crabby until it did.

On the 10th Nov I had a cervical epidural cortisone injection (for neck injury) and I have bled and bled ever since, with each day the flow just seeming to get heavier with really bad clotting.

All in all I have now been bleeding for 14 days with no sign of it slowing down - so, after reading everyone elses experiences I'm putting it down to the injections, but seeing my GP tomorrow just in case.

I underwent arthrocentesis for my jaw which included a steroid cortisone injection. I started my period a couple of weeks later and have now been bleeding almost constantly for 23 days. I've seen the doctor twice, had 2 ultrasounds to look for polyps, cysts,etc... and they did not find anything. I also had an HSG. I happened to be trying to get pregnant and my cycles have always been irregular, but I never bleed for more than 7 days. Finally, the nurse asked me if I had any steroids recently. It was then that we decided I was bleeding because of the injection. It would have been nice if this was the first question she asked me before wasting a lot of money or better yet, it would have been nice for the surgeon's office performing my injection had warned me that this might be a possible side effect. I can't believe some doctors are acting like they've never heard of this happening. Clearly there is a relationship. When does this bleeding stop? Anyone have an answer? I'm still going and the entire time I've been all weepy and acne faced. It's horrible. I refuse to take birth control pills to get it to stop unless it absolutely will not stop on its own. I can't really prepare to have a baby if I'm bleeding rather than ovulating.

I am so glad I found this thread. My doctor DID NOT mention any side effects with the steroid shot. I got the shot in my lower back. My period is regular every 26 days. I knew I wasn't pregnant and tried to find info online, but couldn't find much about the effects on the menstrual cycle. I saw my dr. yesterday, 3 weeks after the shot. I mentioned that I haven't had my period and he says its normal and that when I do get my period it will be very heavy. He also said that it would take a couple of cycles for it to get back to normal.

I agree with other people posting, I find it incredibly strange and irresponsible of doctors not to mention the major effect on our cycles. Crazy! I guess I should be thankful that I haven't had my period for weeks like the other gals. My husband and I want to try and get pregnant soon. It would have been nice to know this ahead of time!

I forgot to mention I have tons of acne because of the shot too! My shoulders, back, chest and cheeks are covered in little red pimples. I also feel bloated and I've gained some weight. I just want to get my period and move on with my life!

I do feel like the shot was worth it because I was in so much pain before it felt like a miracle. Again, it would have been nice to know all the side effects prior.

My experience was similar. First shot seemed fine. Second shot I got on 3rd day of cycle (I'm a 7 dayer) and it STOPPED completely. Then a week later I started spotting. It's been 2 days of spotting then it started heavier today. Guess I'll have to see how this plays out.

Well. I too am experiencing some strange happenings associated with my period since I got an epidural cortisone injection in my lower back. My period was late starting with major PMS. Since then I have been bleeding for 3-weeks with little discomfort. I have been regular all my adult life. I have an appointment with my gyn in 2-days.

My period started two weeks early and I have been bleeding for 15 days. I'm going to show this site to my doctor. I too am looking for relief from feeling flush and wondering when my cycle will regulate.
