It's a relief to hear all these stories... but disturbing to learn that so many medical personnel - particularly gynecologists - are clueless.

I've had two experiences now.

Several years ago, I received a cortisone shot in my knee just as my period was starting to come to an end. Instead of stopping, however, it started all over again (but did come to an end after the approximate length of another normal period).

In November, I received another cortisone shot in my shoulder, just before my period was due to start (I have a normal 23-24 day cycle, unfortunately). I did not get my period until the 30th day... and then I bled for 5 weeks! I'm now at the 30 day point from when I think the next period began, and still no period.

I read someplace else online that it takes several months before your cycle returns to normal. I don't know whether to enjoy the increased time span or spend any time worrying about it!

I too had cervical (neck) facet blocks two years ago and developed four uterine polyps. I also have endometriosis, so I didn't think much of it at first. However, I have had more done since then and they always seem to mess with my period. I am currently having more done in preperation for rhizotomy. I had a period on Janurary 3 and I just started bleeding again. Also I asked my gynocologist if they were related and he said no. It's worth it for the back pain relief, but I would also like to know. If they are getting this many people with period problems they should study it closer. %-)

I had cortisone (among other painkillers etc) injected into my facet joints in my cervical spine for a slipped disc in my neck on 15th January 2009.

The Specialist warned me before the procedure that it may "upset my menstrual cycle" Boy he wasn't kidding! 2 days after the procedure I began to bleed and have only had 6 days (not altogether) in total since without bleeding - some days very light others heavy. :'(

The injections didn't work - afterwards had 2 weeks of more severe pain ans swelling in my neck and then it went back to how it was before.

I am now having physiotherapy - no more injections for me!

It is such a relief to hear from others who have been affected by steroid injections in this way.

The only warning I got from my rheumatologist before he gave me the injection was that I might get a mid cycle bleed the following month or facial flushing.

Neither of these side effects occurred. I had the injection in October, had relatively normal periods November and December but then started with 2 periods in January. Now the bleeding has continued for 20 days with no end in sight. I am going for scans tomorrow but not keen to have the uterine biopsy if this is all a result of the injection.
Presumably the bleeding stops eventually?!

After I received my shot, I decided to do research on the side effects. Bad move. I received a shot in my knee. I feel the shot made my knee worse. I had pain for several weeks after the shot. It's better now, but I think if I rested my knee more, I would have been better off. Now I am experiencing irregular periods. Like the lady above I was on my period when I received the shot. My period was normal for 2 months thereafter. Now, I'm spotting for no reason. I just had my period 2 weeks ago. My period is like clockwork. Every 28 days. This blog makes me concerned, not relieved. I did not even question my doctor when he recommended the shot, which I regret. I knew people that had gotten the shot before, and they made it seem like to was the best thing. All I can say is... trust your instincts!

After reading all the posts on this thread I felt relieved to find out that my 17th day of bleeding is quite normal after having a cortisone shot in my shoulder in late January. Today is day 17 and it is still going on. It started really dark brown with clots. It turned to bright red and now it is thinner with less pigment. I was totally moody for the first week and then it got better. I became really tired. I am guessing from iron deficiency. I have been upping my iron intake and that is helping a little. Thank goodness for the new Infinity pads. They are great.
I called my OBGYN today and I am going in just in case it is something else. If I had known that my menstrual cycle was going to be like this I may not have had the cortisone shot. It is just nice to be filled in about stuff like this.
I see on the posts that the longest period lasted two months. I really hope that it isn't going to be like that for me.

Hi,
I have been Trying for a baby since May 2008, I had a miscarriage in december 2008.
In february 2009 I had my 1st corticiersteroid in my left hip. My Dr knew we were trying for a baby, He did not mention anything about messing up periods?
I had my injection 26th Feb, Started period 10th March for 5 days. Normal.
Yesterday 23rd March started bleeding again, Went to see Dr She said it was because of Injection.
Im devastated as this is our first month trying since our miscarriage?
Does anyone know if this bleeding affects ovulation?as im due to ovulate anyday? if it doesnt and i do ovulate would their be a risk of continued bleeding if we conceived. My doctor does not know the answer!!!!!!!!To make things worse I am Anemic so lengthly episodes of bleeding are quite hard for me as they make me extremely dizzy and sick.
I have to go for bloods tomorrow as already affected and its only the 2nd day of bleeding?
has anyone been trying to conceive and had injections?

many thanks for all your above posts they are all really helpful.

I'm so glad to hear other people experienced this!
I had a cortisone injection in my lower back during day 4 of my last cycle at the end of February. I had no sid effects until my next period started on schedule at the end of March - but it won't stop! It's been 15 days now.

I went to the doctor today, and she said it was an awfully long time after the shot to be from the cortisone, and it was probably stress. I'm not under any extra stress, I rather think it was the injection.

She gave me a 10 day course of Medroxyprogesterone to reset my cycle. Has anyone else had this or found it to help?
Thanks

I had 3 epidural injections 1 in January and Two in February and I have not had a period since January. It is actually quite nice to skip the monthly curse but today I am cramping so bad I am miserable.

I was not told of the side effects either and when I started gaining weight from the shots the doctors office said it is impossible to gain wait from injections and I said they needed to do a little homework on that

I have had all the side effects, weight gain, night sweats, you name it. I probably would have still gotten the injections but it would have been great to see what I had to look forward to.

I have similar symptoms to what people listed. My first steroid injection was done under the care of a different doctor, who didn't tell me about the menstrual changes so I proceeded to run to the gyno and they did every test under the sun, but nothing is wrong which is GREAT. The gyno however was uninformed about the side effects of corticosteroid injections. I had my 2nd and 3rd under the care of a spine surgeon and his anesthesiologist. They did confirm that the irregular bleeding is due to the steroids. As anything else in life, they can't tell you when its going to stop as it affects everyone differently. I did the 2nd and 3rd 2 weeks apart and it seemed to actually lighten my period which had just started when I got the 2nd injection. I got the 3rd and my period was normal, coming a month after my last cycle. But now less than 2 weeks after it ended, I'm back to bleeding! Its frustrating, but hang in there, you're not crazy ladies!

I had a cortisone shot in my foot back in March. In April i skipped my period altogether. In May I started right on schedule. At first was a light period, I now have been going for 7 days and the last 2 have been very heavy with clots. I talked to my GP and she gave me prescription strenght Naproxin to help with the heavy bleeding. My normal period is only 4 days!!!! My GP also told me that cortisone is known to cause problems with periods, my foot doctor never told me. The cortisone shot didnt even help my foot at all. Talk to your Dr. about getting something to help with periods, 51 days is just too long. Good Luck!!

I started spotting for three days and then bleeding for about five days now not heavy bleeding but just regular bleeding with no signs of stopping. i have no pain or cramps or anything like that but the bleeding does not seem to want to stop. i am so glad i found this forum because i thought i was going crazy losing my mind.

I'm having the same problem. I got the shots in both of my knees. Since then i went for three months having my period every other week. Then suddenly it stopped. I went to the doctor about my irregularity, and got a ton of blood test done, all showing negative for Polycystic ovary syndrome, but they still think i have that, though before hand I was fairly regular. Now they are pushing birth control pills, and my knees are starting to give me problems again.
I'm trying to do research on this issue, and trying to decide if I'm going to get the shot again, or if I'll just suffer, and hope my period becomes regular. Please post any sites that have information about this that can be helpful.

I stopped taking my pill after 12 years in March as I am trying to conceive so i was pleased when my period seemed to settle straight away to coming 32 days on the dot and lasting about 4-5. I have suffered from extreme back pain and was advised to have a steroid injection in my lower back. 18 days after just having a period i have taken it again and 17 days on it is still there, just when i hope it is going away it comes again, it is not heavy, brownish colour but i cant see any end to it and how i am going to get pregnant during all this is beyond me as i dont even know if i am ovulating and cannot have intercourse while this is continuing on and on. Going to see my gp tomorrow but i cant see what they will be able to do. Does it stop ??? I think it is connected to the injections otherwise how come i was quite regular 32 days and had a period lasting 4-5 days then i have the injections (4 of at one time) and now this, bleeding for 17 days and still going. Cant believe this is happening !!

So happy to have found this info.. had a cortisone shot in right knee back in 07/2008 and it immediately affected my cycle. I dismissed it to stress and change in routine (was traveling through Europe). When I returned I immediately went to OB/GYN and she expressed that she felt there was no association and to keep eye on things and return should things worsen. One year almost to the day later I required a cortisone shot in the left knee and here I am back in the same situation... Period started 36 days ago and it has not stopped regardless of the fact that my birth control pills have been taken business as usual. I personally believe there is a strong correlation ... Thanks
