Hi Everyone,

I want to share my experience here as well so we can all learn from each other. I ended up on this forum after Googling for reasons why I’m bleeding for so long & frequent the last two months. Dr (male) didn’t not warn me of any side effects relating to injection at all, just said its very common and powerful anti-inflammatory. I usually have a 28 day cycle with 3-4 day periods so regular my husband can call it to the day I’m going to start. After the injection it’s been all chaos! At the end of the first episode of heavy irregular bleeding I got so lightheaded that I felt I was going to pass out. For some reason the following two days I got such an intense headache and my neck muscles got stiff (hard to swallow) that I drove myself to the ER thinking I was having a stroke or aneurysm. Two blood tests, an EKG and brain MRI and they only found my blood pressure and potassium levels were low. They couldn’t explain the menstrual bleeding or massive headache, or neck spasm?

Date: 09/01/2017
Diagnosis: shoulder bursitis (right side)
Treatment: corticosteroid injection
Symptoms: irregular bleeding, lightheaded and headaches

09/08/17 - 09/17/2017 (10 days)
Irregular bleeding started a week after I hit my shot during my ovulation part of my cycle. Heavy bleeding, sometimes feeling lightheaded.

09/28/2017 - 09/30/2017 (3 days)
Started at regular time of my usual period, short and dark brown.

10/19/2017 - now (3 days so far)
Irregular bleeding at tail end of ovulation part of cycle. It’s heavy bleeding again and not showing signs of stopping soon.

My usual period should commence Nov 1 or 2nd. My concern is about the unusual amount of blood loss and the fact that I get lightheaded and feel lethargic all day.

I was so comforted to see other women here having similar side effects with menstruation after getting this treatment. I don’t know if headaches and muscle spasms are related too but I suspect they are since I have had no other medical intervention/medicine and all these symptoms came in around same time.

I am extremely upset with the orthopedic surgeon who gave me sh*t so quick without warning me of the risks, and I refuse to go back for another appt.

Here’s hoping we all get better soon and rid our bodies of this disruptive chemical. Oh and that the medical community acknowledges that this “common” treatment does cause have serious disruptions in females.

I also experiencing heavy cycle which I have NEVER been this way before Kenalog injection 10mg (for the whole body rashes and hives caused by Bactrim antibiotic allergy. )

My period came 3 days early after the injection ( my normal cycle is 28days for the past 15 yrs) and the first day was very bright red and very heavy (changing pad every hour) and on 2nd day is the same. I am hoping my period will end as my regular 5 days routine.

These doctors don’t warn you or even mention about the side effects before they give you any medication and they wait till you have new problem and they drug you with another med to control the symptom but it will most likely lead to other side effects. It will be a never ending story. (sigh)

Could it be possible you have mild allergic to Kenalog ?
Do drink a lot of water everyday, add unsalted water boiled spinach to your meal ( for iron). Take vitamin D3 , C and B. Sleep more as try taking naps or rest in bed through out the day.
Take your mind off it by reading bible or books. I hope this helps. Get well soon.

***When I had allergic reaction to Bactrim (Sulfa based antibiotic) the signs included headaches , joint pain, lymph node swollen, my arm muscles were tight and numb. And after 5 days I was sent to ER because of swollen face and lips. The drug is still haunting me now. I have rashes and hives all over my body. My doctor just give up on me and say oh you are just bad luck.

Same here! I had a cortisone shot for my tennis elbow on dec 13. It def helped my elbow about 3 days after terrible pain. I did start my period earlier than normal. Then I had another period about 1 week after the first one ended. The flow is different. I’m guessing it really messes with hormones based on all these replies!

I have them same issue! Got my shot I’m my knee 3 weeks ago and have been bleeding ever since my shot. Just called my GYNECOLOGIST and she said it can make your cycle crazy. Of course they want to see me this week to make sure I don’t have an infection. My cycle is always on time every 28 days. This had to be from this shot.

OMG! So so glad I found this thread. I had the suspicion since the timing of when I started shots for my scar and my periods becoming never ending. I kept going back for more shots every month and told my derm about it. she kept saying, well its rear but maybe you are allergic so let's reduce the intensity. But that did not help. Why won't they tell you about this?? My periods are so crazy and non-stop for last three months. I am losing my mind.

Can anyone tell me how long did it take for your cycle to get back to normal after you stopped the shots?

I would also like to know what to expect for the length of menstruation but I imagine it varies individually. I am 63 and in good health but had a cortisone shot in my shoulder one week ago. Two days later, after being menopausal for years!, I started spotting. Bright red, not super heavy but startling. Six days later, still spotting. I had a similar experience several years ago and never put it together but I had also had a shot in my other shoulder. Now I think that was related to spotting as well. Also never warned by my doctor and she is a woman.

Dear all,
I was the lady who replyed 6 months ago who's periods stopped after having the cortisone injection in my shoulder for my rotator cuff.My periods came back after 9 sinc having the cortisone injection i was pleasantly suprised.I had started to drink a lot of filtered water at least 4 litres per day fush out the cortisone out of my system and it seemed to help detox my body and get rid of the toxins from the cortisone injections..i would never have the cortisone injections again and seek alternative therapies like acupunture..as the cortisone injections interfere with a womans menstrual cycle.im sure the detox of water helped to flush out all the toxins from the cortisone injections...i would never have the cortisone again only natural therapies if it happened again.

I am sharing my experience so when someone is worried like I have a been they might understand. Back in February I received two cortisone shots in each wrist for carpal tunnel syndrome. Let me tell you the relief was immediate: however I am 38 years old and my period is always regular no BC but my period comes every 28-30 days like clockwork. I keep up with my period every month. Well at the beginning of March I had a period come a little early and it was 7 days long mine is typically 4-5 days and better light only one day kind of heavy. This was 7 days pretty long. I didn’t think anything of it. Then 7 days later I start again. Of course I freak out Bc in all my life this has never happened. This heavy heavy period lasted 5 days. I went to the doctor had a ultrasound and pap. Pap was clear no issues. Expect one fibroid and my lining was a little thick , she said she no reason for concern and attributed my period to stress. Even tho I was thinking I’m always stressed. Anyways life moved on period was normal April and May. However in May I hurt my back well remembering how well cortisone worked on my hands I went back and received two cortisone shots one in my hip and one in muscle of back. I received the shots on a few days after my cycle for may had ended. Well about 2 weeks later I started spotting which I never do. So I freak out and think maybe this is implantion spotting took tons of pregnancy test the next few days all neg. start my period 7 days early bleed for 5 days and then stop. Then 2 days after it stops. I start again and it’s been going now for 7 days. It wasn’t until I became so worried and researched that I started to understand that it had to be these shots. That was the only thing different. I am still going back to the gyn to rule out anything else even tho it has to be these shots . Since extra periods only happened the months they where received

Also wanted to add I also thinking my slight thickening of my lining may be due to shots. She said it wasn’t enough for concern but wanted to watch it. After reading countless articles I have read many things how these shots while in system can effect the lining. I am not a doctor but I do believe these shots mess the menstrual cycle up completely.
