I would like to know if anyone has been rid of the side effects and in what time frame. I don't see many posts of recovery. Please post here when you are back to normal. I am one of the many cortisone side effect sufferers. Thanks.

I too had a cortisone shot given to me about three weeks ago. My period started lightly 15 days ago, that lasted for about a week. It has been steady and occasionally heavy for the past eight days. I was also given a prescription for meloxicam, I've never taken it before and I recently stopped because I was beginning to worry.  I don't have any cramping. I have no history of fibroids. I am usually very regular...every 26 days lasts for 4-5 days. I am 43 years old. I was having a lot of shoulder pain... My shoulder feels so much better but I am wondering when this is going to end.  I haven't talked to my dr. I don't want to mess with a bunch of unnecessary tests when the only change in my body was the injection. Any response to how long this is going to last??

My period lasted three full weeks, light the first week and much heavier than my regular period for the next two.  I hope it helps to know that there is an end in sight.

I am going through the exact thing. I am even extremely bloated in my stomach area to the point I am now often asked if I am pregnant and how far I am. I am not overweight on any other body parts except my belly. It is embarrassing, and I have had gas and irritation since getting it too. My Stomach has been queasy and I have had experienced fatigue constantly since then. The shot was directly in my spine and my periods came like clockwork before the shot and I am also not pregnant. The only man I am sexual with is my Boyfriend who got a visectamy done years ago. I am also experiencing cramping and discomfort like I am about to get my cycle... but NOTHING. I was just researching Hormone therapy after Cortisone treatment and found this post. I will never get another one of those awful shots again I hope you find relief and a steady cycle again soon too.

Previously there has not been a scientific study showing that steroid (cortisone) shots lead to abnornal bleeding. However, a new study on over 8000 women published in the American Journal of Ob/Gyn shows this is an absolutely true phenomenon and doctors should be aware of this potential side effect.

Had a series of 3 steroid shots. Have only had 3 days with no period in the past month and 4 days. All other days have been extra heavy, to the point of flowing at times as long as 30-45 minutes solid. I am weak and tired all the time.

Had a kenalog shot 4 weeks ago, have now been bleeding 20 days. Have dreadful pains in my stomach as well. Had I known the side effects of this injection I would never have got it. Really hope it stops soon as I'm so weak and tired.

Had a epidural cortizone shot in my L4 area for sciatica on my right side a few weeks ago.  I have had just a few days after the injection severe muscle spasms in my legs, mostly at night while I am sleeping and a missed period now or a very late period.  I have to contribute these side effects from the injection as I have never experienced severe muscle cramping and have been regular with my period even though I am perimenopausal.

Cortisone, depmeridol and kenalog, stays in your system forever. People who pass away and years later have their bones examined, still have the hardened steroids in the joints where they have been injected. If the cortisone is injected in the proper spot, which must be into a joint or area where the surfaces are very hard such as bone and cartilege, rarely have any issues at all, except maybe some soreness and achiness in the injection area, which is completely natural and actually tells you it is in the right spot. If the target is missed and the injectable item gets into tissues or muscle, then it can get into the system through the blood stream and like any other drug, will cause mild and even serious side effects, including what you are describing. I have had nearly 80 injections in everything from my big toes, to my heels, to the orbital bones of my eyes, my jaw, thumbs, knees, shoulders, and spine as well as everywhere else. I cannot tolerate ingesting anti-inflammatories as I have had diabetes for 30+ years, liver cancer and cirrhosis, spleen issues, and other issues. I have very little side effects, but I do have a massive pain tolerance so cort. injections for me are nothing. The main side effects I have are the soreness I spoke of and if a little gets into my tissues, then I often suffer nausea and upset stomach for a few days that is taken care of by antacids, Alka Seltzer being the best. I personally believe this is what happened to you and it doesn't "work itself out" within 6-8 weeks, then don't call the doctor's office, GO THERE and put your foot down. It's YOUR body and if you have concerns, then doctors have an obligation to deal with them. I f your doctor won't, then seek help through your ER doctor and others. Don't quit. It's YOUR body and YOUR choice.

I had an intramuscular injection of Kenalog 9/23/13 for a sinus infection and inflammation. I, too, have always had very regular normal periods. Not on the pill. On 10/18, my period started as usual and was normal, except maybe a little lighter. It stopped on 10/23, as usual. Then 10/25 i started bleeding again. Within a day it had progressed to heavy bleeding with clots, no end in sight. Went to ob/gyn office where they kept saying this is common at this age (42), but agreed that the abrupt change was not typical. They reluctantly "agreed" that the Kenalog could be a contributing factor, as well as the 3 courses of antibiotics taken in August-October. Did a pelvic ultrasound that was normal except a 4 cm cyst on the left ovary, which was not ruptured or bleeding, so not the cause of this trouble. They suggested I take 2 Safyral (birth control pills) today, reassess tomorrow. If bleeding continues, take two more and taper down as the bleeding slows. Has anyone else tried this and had it work?

I was so happy to find this post. I got 2 cortisol shots in my shoulder in between periods. I started a few days late and it lasts 6 days then went away. The very next day it was back in full force. I feel like a teenager. I am bleeding through heavy overnight pads. It's embarrassing. I went to the emergency room and all blood work, blood count, and ultrasounds were normal. They were informed about the shots and made no mention of the possibility. My GP says there is nothing she can do. I have since refused anymore shots because I would prefer to deal with shoulder pain over bleeding for 17 days (with no sign of stopping). It is very heavy and full of clots. I am going back to the dr. I am having shoulder surgery on Dec 16 and I am sure it is less than ideal to go into surgery with this problem :/

I also believe this explains why my blood count was normal since the body compensated for the blood loss during a period.

I've had 2 cortisone injections over the past 2 monthsin my foot for plantar faciitis. I have been menstruating every 2 weeks since then, have had severe depression and my skin has been breaking out really bad. I didn't put 2and 2 together until talking to a friend about these changes. I recently turned 40 and thought I was going crazy or starting menopause! He mentioned side effects of cortisone. So I started reasearching, and found this thread! I'm convinced these changes are due to the cortisone injections since looking back it all started after my first injection! I've also had unstable blood sugar! So after finding this info, my next step is detoxing to try to reset my body! Good luck ladies!!!
