I received a corticosteroid shot called depo-medrol on Oct 31/13. I got my period on time on Nov 25/13 and its still going today. Its been 30 days. Does anyone have any idea when I'll be back to normal again ? I used to be like clockwork. I got my period on time every month and it lasted 6 days. The only thing that has changed was this steroid shot. I am worried this is affecting my ovulation. Help !!

I have been getting cortisone shots for my back and all 3 times I got heavy bleeding for 1-3 months after, all of which gave me a simple ovarian cyst. I wished it wouldnt, but i need these shots :(

This is interesting.  I have a 7 month old that I have been exclusively breastfeeding.  I haven't had a period yet.  I got cotisone shots in both my wrists and the next day my milk supply was pretty much gone.  It came back the next day luckily.  It's now been 2 weeks since the shots and I just found out I am pregnant again.  I think the hormones in the shot caused me to ovulate a few days later.  I'm excited for baby #2, but these babies are very close in age!!!  I am convinced the cortisone played a part here.

I am age 46 and got an intrarticular cortisone shot in my frozen shoulder August 19. A few days later (after I was done pouring sweat at night, laying awake, red faced and wondering "what is this fresh hell?", I got 4 days of bright red light bleeding. AND THAT WAS IT! It is now FIVE MONTHS LATER and no period or ovulation. I only got the shot to avoid surgery so I could care for my two year old. NEVER AGAIN, CORTISONE! Surgery might have been a better option, sadly. Shoulder is looser, but I still suffer, so maybe time helped and not the shot. I was ovulating regularly (and when your clock is ticking, boy is this situation ANNOYING!) and cycles were 24-26 days most months with a smattering of 34-44 day cycles. One was 88 days but the rest were fairly normal. UNTIL NOW. What an awful thing, to want a child at the end of your fertility window and then have a cortisone shot mess it all up! My GP said to call my OB. My OB says that he can do an FSH test on day 3 of my period. IF IT EVER COMES AGAIN. No word from my GP about side effects (not even a leaflet!) of the shot but Google told me everything I experienced was shot-related. He was surprised that my periods stopped. Everyone blames perimenopause and my "age" even though most women in my family didn't start it until after age 53. Even the male surgeon said not to get another shot because I clearly didn't tolerate it well. What an awful situation. I will post again if it is ever resolved. 142 days and no period.

Glad to see others with similar experiences also. I am 10+ years post-menopause and this is the 2nd time of having a cortisone shot in my knee and this ALSO is the 2nd time I have begun a period about 1-2 weeks after the shot. After the first time (approx. 1 year ago), I called my gyn and she said she had heard of this so relieved my worries some. I will mention it again though on my upcoming visit.

Cindyb First of all, THANK YOU. I have taken 3 hpt and went to the clinic for one. All negative. I am 42 married, husband had a vasectomy 3 months after the birth of our daughter, who is now 13. So missing my period has had me a complete mess. My Dr. Gave me 10 injections in my back in November. I'd already had my period. I don't worry, or at least haven't for a long time, that I was pregnant. I have a normal cycle. Last 3 days. My daughter was a planned pregnancy. No big deal. Decembers period late. Lasted until January 2nd and was just irregular. Light like I was going to stop then heavy. Then stopped and I haven't had a period. I am emotional. Crying one moment laughing the next. I don't normally snap at people so easily and I'm lucky I have a husband who loves me so much. I wanted to leave me. At one point laughing and crying. My daughter started to cry because I felt like I was completely loosing my mind. She just hugged me. I had another 19 injections in my back in December. Last week he suggested half of what he was doing. So I got 10 again. I still haven't started my period. I went to family planning yesterday dreading the worst honestly. To get another negative result for pregnant. And I have done three ept at home myself. As, I said I haven't had to worry. My. husband is fixed. I'm still. an emotional mess. So much to the point I almost went to the hospital. Even though my trip to the clinic did ease my mind. I had reasearched every possible reason and this morning, it just clicked. I don't feel pregnant. I'm not sick. I. can look at food. My appetite is getting back to normal. I have looked up every possible cause. I had a kidney infection, thought possibly that. Oh, that happened to reaccure when I got the February injections. I feel so much relief. I will not be getting those shots again. Ever. I want this out of my system and my body back to normal. I am so thankful for everyones input., After glancing back at my journal, I can read the difference in myself. And my body still got swollen breast the week before. I SHOULD have started. Slight pinces or cramps, but still no period. Then it stopped. Like I'd had my period. Now I'm just concerned about how long until I am back to normal.?. The Dr. Never even mentioned what he was giving me. Just pain shots. I had to ask and look at the bottles. I feel so relieved. These negatives, far outweigh the positives for me. Thank you again...

I'm glad I found this site.  I have carpal tunnel on both hands and received Kenalog injections in each wrist two weeks ago.  I'm 52 and am perimenopausal (it's been 8 months since my last period).  Last week, I started feeling fatigued, got hot flashes again, acne, craving breads and sweets and 10 days after the shot I began flooding again.

I spoke with the ob/gyn advice nurse today and she didn't think there was a correlation but if I contunue flooding to make an appointment w/my ob/gyn.

I think I'll call the orthopedist who gave me the injections tomorrow and learn how much he injected me with (I can't recall) and to let him know I'm experiencing issues not necessarily listed as a side effect (in WebMD, etc.) but similiar to what many of you have referenced.  Go figure...

Got a cortisone shot for my carpal tunnel on Oct 2013....had 8 day long periods (usually only 5 days long) separated by 4 days continuously until December 2013. When the bleeding and spotting finally stopped, my first "normal" cycle was 45 days long instead of my usual 35 day cycle. The next one seems that it's going to be 28 days. The doctor knew that we were trying to get pregnant. This has only made it harder. We've been trying for 6 months, but I also have thyroid problems. Along with the spotting/bleeding, I also developed pretty bad cystic acne. It started November 2013 and has yet to get better. I've tried facials, creams, etc. I cannot try anything too powerful because we are trying to conceive. I now also have scars when I NEVER suffered from acne before this shot. I wish I had never gotten it.

I had my last period in December 2007.  The beginning of April this year I was given a steroid shot in my shoulder for an inflamed rotator cuff and one week later got my period, imagine my surprise!  It did stop after about a week, but it's now starting again. I just happened to have a vaginal sonogram scheduled because I'm on HRT so I told the woman performing the sonogram about the steroid shot and getting my period after 6 years and she said "oh yes" she heard that happens and she also said antibiotics can also bring on a period.

Since I had no pads or tampons in the house I had to shop and was pleased to find this new item called softcups which are like disposable diaphrams.  I wish they were around when I had my period, they are comfortable and easy to use and more comfortable than pads and tampons and I can work out in them.

These posts totally helped me, last week I just got injections in my spinal joins for my lower back, and this week I started my period, which is way, way early! Gosh now I am wondering how long its going to last after reading these posts, but I feel better that I now know what caused it. Thank you!

I am 53 and was in early menapause with only 2 spottings in a year. I had a steroid injection in my hip and had spotting a few days later and now has gone into full blown period with cramps like I have not had in years. I wish that doctors would let you know about side effects of a steriod injection. I'm waiting to get into see the doctor next week.

Thank you so much!! I had this injection along eith two other steroids for an abscess tooth and I was just on the first day of my period when I haf those shots. The next day, my period had ended. I knew the steroids probably ended it. Nothing strange to me. But a week later, my period came back with a vengeance and I have bled for 28 days only stopping for half a day! I was scared and everyone kept suggesting things like miscarriage and pregnancy. Glad to know I was right! Never getting those shots again!

THank GOODNESS you all posted your experience!  Thank you.  I just had a cortisone shot in my kneee which my brand new orthopedic doctor was all to quick to stick the needle in my knee without talking me through side affects... I was suppose to start my period Aug 1 and I'm only getting veryvery light stuff, not really blood. I was nervous and trying to convince myself maybe I am going through early menopause! hahaaha. Thank GOD you all posted. This is a side affect of the shot, NOT REALLY loving the shot. THe doctor made it sound like it would be a game changer for my activity particpation... I'm now experience other leg complications, had an ultrasound to rule out blod clot, will have an MRI Friday to see if I've got a meniscus tear or something.  BUT NO PERIOD for sure.
