I have been taking dexedrine for a month. I take 30mg. I took more and more, and that made it worse, so I stopped doing that. That was a bad idea and not the doctor's idea either. There are already bad side effects, but I find that they can be counteracted by a strong dose of common sense, and will! I Take them once a day, and I let them wear off. I get a bit anxious, so I start to do some meditive and mindful exercises, which helps reduce the strain. I'm irritable, so I don't get into conversations which make it worse. I'm not hungry, but I eat anyway, because otherwise you'll get skinny and sick... common sense. I stopped it for a few days and my anxiety and depression came up heavily. So I did more psychological work. My apetite did come raging back, but I just knew it was because I STOPPED  the meds, so I didn't give into the urges.

I'd say don't take this drug if you expect it to work on its own. It has its benifits, but also it has a lot of sour notes. IF you're not prepared to do plenty of psychological work alongside the medication, it's not going to help very much in the long run.

There are no miracle pills. You have to work hard for everything in life. I used to be a drug addict and I have had no problems abusing this drug. Right now, I stick to my dosage, and if it stops working as well, I take a few days off, or decrease the dose for a while so I'm not completely flat... then bump it back up and t works again.

I think it's a dangerous drug if you are not educated on how it works, and also how your condition works. It's not easy. You have to make sure the benifits outweigh the negatives. Take an educated approach. Use your common sense, and follow the rules that you know make it work for you. If you can't do that, then you might have trouble. I'm still learning how to use it right, and the jury is still out. So far it has been abot half and half, and if that doesn't improve, I'll try something else. There are many other medications that are similar and some that work in a different way. Some of them aren't addictive at all.

Do your research man, don't fall into the traps. Doctors should educate their patients better on this medication. It takes some getting used to...

I Have Narcolepsy which has caused multiple auto accidents, I have taken 60mg to 90mg of Dexedrine for 6 years and overweight and ran out due to too tired to get filled or needing a ride.. Never have I had any issues like withdrawal or cravings but I feel and it has been reported in many scientific studies that Narcolepsy addiction is rare to none. I also feel patients that can not understand the dose prescribed and the written instructions on the bottle should absolutley not given count 2 narcotics..It is accident to happen and they end up in the ER or dead from a heart attack and families and patients throw all blame on the doctor who is then investigated and DEA..Narcolepsy is a incurable disorder and patients like this need to try a placebo.. this behavior has impacted Narcolepsy in such a negative way..

I've been taking Dex just over 12 years and it changed my life.  I went from a 3% reading comprehension level to a 99% level during college and I started to love learning and love life in general.  I was taking 3 - 15 mg time release capsules at 5:00am each morning (Just set your alarm, take your pills and go back to sleep and it will wake you up; alert and ready to take on the day an hour later.) If you take them early enough you most likely won't have a problem going to sleep.  I did lose 30 lbs. the first 2 months of taking them, but I also had so much energy that I was working out and running 6 miles/day, so that contributed to the weight loss, I'm sure.

The thing I hate the worse is the dry mouth and "lock-jaw" that you get.  I would bite the sides of my cheeks and not notice because I was so focused.  If you drinks LOTS of water you won't get the dry mouth and the "lock-jaw" goes away after the first few weeks.

If you feel like you're meds are wearing off (I call it getting immune to them) too early in the day, you can ask for a smaller dose (5mg) tablets in addition to your time-release capsules that you can use to give you back some energy and help you focus for a few more hours at a time.  My doctor called them "bumpers".  I didn't need to use them every day, just when I really needed to focus later in the day or evening.

Since college I have been off Dex for the past 3 years because I got pregnant and was nursing after the babies were born.  It was hard coming off of them, but definitely doable.  You will be a zombie for the first couple of days, but a cup of coffee will suffice until your body gets use to it again.

I now take the same time release capsules again but only 2 - 15mg caps a day, without the bumpers.  This seems to have a lot less of a zombie effect when I don't take them.

Hope this helps.

I have taken dexedrine for 5 years and it really helped me. I am a recovering addict and have never abused it- even when I had an all nighter to pull I would make myself drink coffee and not take extra meds. It helps me settle down and provides me with long term stability or instead of running every day, and sometimes twice a day, i would run 3 or 4 times a week. I did go off it and took up yoga which was great but my life really did change when I went back on it. I will never go off it again. It is a need for my brain impairment! Lol. Get all of the info and don't listen to the nayayers. ADHD is real, and medications do help. The other thing that really helped was becoming a VEGAN. Calmed me right down........... It all works. Running, yoga, meds, structure, lists, calenders, "screw it time", advocacy, lots of hobbies, and there you have it! Be well.

Dexedrine is not a diet pill! Losing weight comes from a simple equation: Caloric intake - caloric output < 0....meaning you burn more calories than you take in. Exercise and a healthy diet are the most foolproof methods to fat loss. Dexedrine is non addictive in people with ADHD. There may be a slight dependency: when I stop taking it I get about 32 hours of sleep in 2 days, but I've never craved it. I'm a 24 year old student and have been taking dex off and on for 9 years. I only take it to study, and although it does have side effects, one must be aware of their body in order to get the most out of it.

I take Dexedrine to help with my Trichotillomania, I am currently on 2x5 mg tablets a day. I have been on it for approximately a year and this drug has helped so much!! As soon as I feel a bit of a tolerance to my prescribed dose I take a break for about 3-7 days ( depending on how long I'm capable of going without it) as it takes 3 days for Dexedrine to leave your body. I have lost weight on it, I don't have trouble sleeping, on the 2/3 day of not taking it I do have a headache ( which is normal) and as the pill wears off in the afternoon I am more irritable, the main thing is to be smart about what your doing and be realistic on your expectations for this drug, if they're not helping or doing what you want don't increase the dose just try a different medication. Peoples bodies react in different ways and cope in different ways so if it's not working then quit while your ahead. For weightloss I would look into a different pill such as Duromine, I took it previously for weight loss and it was amazing, I was a bit zombified but was happy with the result at the end of the month. :)

Yes it is funny to see all the comments from people who have never taken this drug. Why are there always comment from people who use capital letters basically saying you cant do anything without the doctors ok. Anyway I would not worry about having a baby and being on Dexedrine. I have been on and off this drug for years. I quite smoking 4 years ago and when people use the word addiction I think of what it was like to quite smoking. I personally don't feel that Dexedrine is all that addictive. Yes it can give you some energy but your body can only do so much. If I took 10 mg of Dexedrine it is a little energizing, yet if I took 60mg of Dexedrine I would be in bed sleeping.
Different drugs effect people differently.

I'll keep my experience short and simple.

Dex does wonder for focus and concentration, you can get anything done but you truly become dependent on it to function. If I miss a day, I can not think clearly and and get absolutely nothing done.

I developed a very fast and noticeable heart rate such that when trying to sleep, the sound and feeling from my pounding heart would keep me up at night.

I recently filled a 3 month prescription and, last week dumped them all down the toilet because it has become an addiction that I cannot focus without the drug so I want to kick that addiction asap.

Any severity of ADD that you have is 1000 times better than the feeling you get coming down off dex. If you have no problem being amphetamine-dependent for the rest of your life, then dex is a good choice, however know that it WILL become an addiction.

note this is my second day off dex and I can't even think properly while writing this response because my mind if everywhere, I would suggest not taking because of this.

1. drink juice if you can't eat. your body needs fuel to function. low blood sugar is causing you to be cranky and lethargic.

2. a proper workout at the end of the day can help with both appetite and sleep. aim for 3-4 hours before bed time, then come home and have a nice warm shower, put on some comfy clothes and have a snack or meal & relax. you'll feel drowsy a few hours later.

3. i strongly recommend anyone who is on dex to look into and talk to their doctor about switching to vyvanse, it's like dex 2.0, similar drug but longer lasting and more of a steady drip rather than peaks & valleys. I made the switch 2 years ago and I swear I get all the benefits with way fewer side effects (after about 3 weeks of adjustment). My appetite is better, I sleep better, my moods are better, I'm just as focused through the day, no zombie, much less introverted/irritable. It won't stop you from doing ocd stuff like picking/biting nails/inside on your mouth, but it's not as bad & if you chew gum that helps occupy your mouth. It's more expensive but there are drug plans that you can apply to if you are a student or low income that can cover it 100%.

4. to the person who thinks it's a diet pill -- diets don't work long term. Sorry, there is no quick fix to weightloss (unless you are diagnosed with some thyroid disease & get treated). they secret to weightloss is consume fewer calories than you expend. That's the only way. Personally my trick is to weigh myself most mornings. I have a 5lb window that is my "normal" weight range. If the scale says i'm above (even by 1lb), I cut out the late night snacks and try not to eat/drink junk for a few days. It's much easier to catch and lose 3lbs than 30lbs and once you get your eating habits under control you won't be seeing the "above" very often. Beyond that, the mental strain of being on a diet leaves you feeling unsatisfied & punished. Being careful for a few days -- you can see the light at the end of that tunnel. knowing you're going to be on a diet for a few months because you let yourself gain 30 lbs, not good for your sanity or self esteem & therefore not good for your diet.

I have been on dexedrine for 16 years, it wasn't the first drug my doctor put me on but it has been the best drug for me.  It was like a light switch turned on.  I've not lost weight nor sleep, it works the way it is suppose too.   It helps me stay focused and I've had no side effects.  I've been on the same dose 2X 10mg a day.  Do not self medicate, do as your doctors says.

I've been using this for a couple of years now, I don't have the time to write a full report, but I would like to suggest that what some you say are symptoms of dex, could also be of getting older.

Losing interest in stuff, hairline moving up etc. Guess what people experience that are not on this? The reason I still take it, is cause society isn't made for dreamy people.
