i have been on dex for over ten years. i take the four hour release so i can manage my day better. if i take it after 6pm i am guarenteed not to get to sleep before 2am. i have had dry mouth and teeth grinding as the main side effects. it has been very effective. i would recommend not telling people you take this ecause they start reading into any change in mood . i have been labelled as a drug addict and lost the love if my life because of misconceptions concerning ADD and dex. hope this helps.
I am 54 and have been diagnosed with adult ADD

Please don't take this medicine while you're pregnant. It can cause miscarriages and birth defects as well as raising your baby's heart rate! I have been on this medicine for 8 years and decided I wanted to stop taking it for when I start a family in a few years. My doctor said that quitting cold turkey after taking it for so long is not healthy and not good for your body- you will go through withdrawls. He has been weaning me off by going down a dose every 30 days and I'm down to 5mg a day for 28 more days. I can say it's a lot easier weaning yourself off as opposed to just quitting altogether- I tried the other way. You are a bit more tired at first once you get to the 10mg but your body gets use to not having as much of the medicine and it adjusts. I've also noticed I am a lot hungrier and snacking more throughout the day but that could be a coincidence. Trust me, try weaning off of it, it will be so much easier on your mind and body!

Dexedrine pros and cons

Hi All, I am a terminally diagnosed Cancer Patient , 53 yrs old.
So I Have been prescribed Dexedrine, for focus and energy. I was started on 10mg per day, and within seven days I started developing a tolerant to it already and withdrawal symptoms between a dose for more.
So the next morning I took two 10mg dexedrine. It was a little speedier but again I felt I like it was not enough.
So I went to my Doctor, and told him I had doubled up on the 10mg in the morning and sometimes another one in the late afternoon so I can stay awake. He said, Well you should not of done that...lol
And then prescribes me 15mg dexedrine 2 X per day. I take it only once a day, but have problems sleeping without Lorazepam or sleeping pills.
I've been taking dexedrine for only two weeks, I can already see the potential for addiction.
My question to anybody out there is, If I take 15mg per day, is this a cause of concerns for getting addicted? What is considered a heavy dexedrine addiction, how many mg per day?
Thanks

The only way it is addictive is just like caffeine, you adjust to the amount and need more but with Dex it is worse. You don't want to go above 15mg x 2 a day. Even then there can be some brain toxicity. I'd highly suggest a quality whole food multivitamin, magnesium (to stop the tolerance) and having a rest period during the weekend.

Most of my life I've had to make excuses why I couldn't finish anything and it caused chronic depression. Exercise really did help, I even ran several marathons. As time wore on, arthritis limited my ability and the NSAID's took a toll on my stomach. My doctor suggested med's to treat the resulting depression. I had to accept I was aging. After trying so many, I found one that helped-- it was Welbutrin. Then we moved and I changed doctors. After a few years, the new doctor said he didn't think I was depressed but had ADD. I was willing to try Dexedrine-- BOOM! DAYLIGHT! How I wish I had known about it sooner. I told my adult children-- only one believed me and he is on a rocket ship to success! But then, the downside took effect, I wasn't eating AT ALL and spent sometimes up to 4 nights in a row with so little sleep it affected my appearance. I used to glow with health then when people saw me after years of disconnection, they asked about my health. 'Oh, I'm just getting old' I thought. Never stop cold turkey. Like coming off anti-depressants, wean with an agreed amount between you and your doctor. I took one less dose every other week, then one less dose every week for another. I am down to three doses a week (MWF) and there I'd like to stay so I can still accomplish some things in life. I am semi-retired and would like to at least finish my degree. It is easy to become too ambitious as well or over-committed creating even more stress. Be realistic and humane with others as well as yourself. It is important to have the support of those closest to you. Don't stay up all hours-- even if you are reclining wide awake, it is better for your heart and brain to have the blood flow back and not have to fight gravity. If you have to take something for sleep, then you have too much in your system. Let your body and brain take a break. Be sure to eat healthy, you can't afford to skip corners on this, especially if you are under 40-- your body needs the nutrients it will depend on in old age! I'm 60 going on 5 years of use. When I saw "Limitless" I totally identified! Maybe I'm lucky I didn't treat sooner, but because the movie scared the c**p out of me (and I respect myself and family) and I might not be as healthy as I am with less use than others I know with more. Dex is a good friend, but I can't allow him complete control. Some things are for me alone. Respect limits, be glad for opportunities and love. Life is not a race!
