Hi, my mother is in a menopause. She did not see a doctor as soon as the symptoms have occurred. Because of that they got worse. It took some time for me to convince her to do so. After seeing him, a hormone replacement therapy was suggested. What exactly HRT is and does it have side effects?

Hi, hormone replacement therapy, or shortly HRT, is one of the procedures for reliving of the menopausal symptoms. Among them are hot flashes, night sweats and vaginal dryness. Also, it may be applied for treatment of some other medical issues. However, the benefits of HRT and some other similar procedures are not fully understood. For example, the effects are different depending on the way the hormones are put in the body-orally or surgically. That is why more research is needed. Also, because of all this, there are possible side effects. Such are: increased risk of endometrial cancer in women that take HRT. But this occurs if estrogen is taken without progesterone. Breast cancer, ovarian cancer, blood clots and stroke are some of the other side effects of HRT.
