Your friend has to know that serious and sometimes even fatal reactions have occurred when Effexor is used in combination with other drugs known as MAO inhibitors. With this group of drugs, I mean antidepressants such as Nardil and Parnate. He must be warranted he should never take Effexor with one of these drugs. Moreover, he should not begin therapy with Effexor within 14 days of discontinuing treatment with one of them. Tell your friend to take Effexor with food, exactly as his doctor prescribed. It may take several weeks before he begins to feel better, and his doctor should check his progress periodically. The best is to take Effexor once at the same time each day, and swallow the capsule whole with water without dividing, crushing, or chewing it. If he misses a dose, it is not necessary to make it up. Tell him to skip the missed dose and continue with his next scheduled dose, and never take two doses at once. Side effects cannot be anticipated, but if any develop or change in intensity, he needs to tell his doctor as soon as possible.
