What can you tell me about the etiologic factors that contribute the occurrence of schizophrenia? A friend of mine has been diagnosed with this condition and he is only 22 years old. Is this condition usually affecting the younger people or not? He does act strangely from time to time, but I never thought he would be this ill…

Well, there are many factors that might contribute the emerging of schizophrenia. We should mention genetics, prenatal issues, social circumstances, in some cases even drug abuse… Of course, there are also neurological and psychological causes. This condition usually affects people in their twenties, although it can affect older people too, but rarely.

Hi there,
Schizophrenia can be very problematic and in many cases it is hard to live with it. The fact is that schizophrenia is been studied for decades now and there were not many breakthroughs in the research. There is no known cause of schizophrenia but some research has shown that there can be interactions with genetic endowment and some environmental upheaval during the development of the brain. I read somewhere that environmental factors later in development can either exacerbate or ameliorate expression of genetic or neurodevelopmental defects. The conclusion is that environmental problems can cause schizophrenia so no matter how young your friend is he can be schizophrenic. He will need a to begin with treatment.
All the best,
Danella
